Hey Does anyone here know whether any core-MS development takes place outside the US? There is an MS development center in India, but they only do some stuff like bridinging between windows and unixes; and some outter stuff like VJ#. Does this mean that the main areas - like development of the OSes, development of dev tools like the PSDK, VS.NET, then stuff like Office, SQL Server etc. take place at Redmond? :-( Thats sad. The focus is too much on the US. Like PDC is in LA. And all the big MS conferences take place in the US. Even when they do hold some sub-conference in India, its almost always in Bangalore and Bombay. Considering that MS is the biggest corporate company in the world I wish they'd so something extra to cater for their core-users in remote areas of the world. I was feeling a bit depressed thinking about this. The only solution to this issue seems to be if Bill Gates' daughter marries an Indian guy (on an H1B) who then comes back to India ;-) And once he inherits MS he might insist that they shift the Redmond office to Trivandrum. Muhahahaha. Nish p.s. Just woke up :-0

As far as I understand it, yes, Microsoft does all development of its major products in Redmond. The only exceptions, IIRC, are Navision (still developed in ?Denmark?) and Great Plains, which I think is still based wherever it was when MS bought them out. It's well proven that development teams work best when communicating regularly and openly, face to face (although this doesn't mean this should be the only form of communication). I think MS has it right. IIRC, MS do some localisation (i.e. translation) work in some of the destination countries, but that work is then shipped back to the US for implementation. Personally I'd like MS to develop some products in the UK ;) but I can see that's unlikely to happen - you'd really have to ship the whole team out. You'll be waiting a while - I think BillG's kids are still less than 10 years old!

I think MS should atleast have a teched/msdn seminars etc at TVM 'cause of the way open source is spreading there in Kerala. I believe open source efforts are headquartered at your place :-) Regards, Kannan

Open source is hot @ tamil nadu too especially @ coimbatore. The last MSDN session was in May (or april i think). It seems there are to be no msdn sessions to be held at Trivandrum in the near future. But even so, .NET is getting more adopted by the day :) Tough there indeed are certain advantages in open source, the long term problems are high - as per some article i read recently. I think people need to focus to the long-term benefits rather than what appears at present. Rakesh Rajan
