Haven't used them myself. An article in this months PC Authority (Australia) tested the Dual Athlons and gave it the thumbs up. Though they didn't test with VC++. Hi, Somewhere I read about VC++ users having problems of some kind with AMD, what exactly I don't know. I've always used Intel in the past, so will probably go the Xeon 1.7GHz route. Old Simon HB9DRV

I'm running an AMD 1ghz at home. No probs with development at all. Tyan just came out with the Tiger MP - a dual AMD CPU motherboard for $225. It even runs with two Durons on it.
Hi, What's a Duron? Old Simon HB9DRV

It's AMD's version of the Celeron, though it kicks the Celerons arse all over the place. Even beats the PIII of the same clock speed in many tests. Michael Martin Pegasystems Pty Ltd Australia martm@pegasystems.com +61 413-004-018 "Don't belong. Never join. Think for yourself. Peace" - Victor Stone

Hi All, Maybe a bloody daft question, but here I go. I need another fast development box, and asked my preferred supplier for something based on 2 x 1.5GHz Pentium. However, they can only offer AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz. Would I run into any problems using AMD Athlon rather than Intel? (Have I the slightest clue nowadays?) Thanks for a quick repsonse and suggestions ;) Old Simon HB9DRV
I purchased a 2x1ghz PIII system from www.outsideloop.com. Probably not the best price, but the system works well. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

I have an AMD K6-2 550 in my development computer, and i have not ran into any problems. Intel and AMD read the same code. -Steven See my redesigned site, Ltpb.8m.com Surf the web faster than ever: http://www.404Browser.com

AMD never had and problems I'm running a 900mhz at home, do a fair amount of development on it. A guy next to me is running 1.2Ghz never had any problems so far. Norm Almond Chief Technical Architect FS Walker Hughes Limited
Hi, Thanks - that's what I wanted to hear. Old Simon HB9DRV

Hi Paul, The code is multi-threaded, and if you are going to test it properly you must have a multi-processor machine. Anyway, Dell offer a 2 x Xeon 1.7GHz box using the 860i chipset, so that may be what I buy. Old Simon HB9DRV
Hi. I've been working on an AMD Athlon 1.4ghz for a while now and not had a problem with either VS6 or 7 using C++ (or anything else for that matter). I haven't got a dual processor box though. -- Andrew.

If you want most out of your system for your money, buy the AMD. Forget all rumours of incompatibilities, that's all old anyway. Athlon dual 1200 MP vs dual Xeon 4 1700 and more: http://www.aceshardware.com/Spades/read.php?article\_id=45000203 Athlon single 1400, single 1200 MP and dual 1200 MP vs Pentium 4 1500 and dual P3 800: http://www.aceshardware.com/Spades/read.php?article\_id=30000193 As you can see an Athlon 1200 MP is faster than a P4 1.5 GHz when using MSVC. Also, a dual Athlon 1200 MP is faster than a dual Xeon 1.7 GHz!

Hi, I will very probably buy the dual Athlon 1200 this week. What about video cards - would you have any suggestion? Old Simon HB9DRV
