I don't know what Bush would have done; I'm just happy that we had the one we had in office when it all came down. I was there, I lived the nuclear nightmare all my childhood. Whether it was inspired genius that motivated his choices, or blind luck, I don't care. We got through it, without precipitating a nuclear holocaust that could easily have gone worldwide, and I'm satisfied with the outcome. "Your village called -

Yesterday, I saw the movie '13 days' with Kevin Costner, which was about the Cuba-Crisis in the sixties. The situation was really close to the edge of total destruction... (and it really was, they had defcon2, and not only in the movie !!! ) One thing was really scarying me: What would George W. Bush have done? Would he had pushed the button? I don't know, but I think Kennedy was the right person at the right time. What do you think?

The basic premise is that the US annihalated the USSR but lost a few cities of their own too and is now a military dictatorship (and more or less a 3rd world country that still has a stockpile of nukes). Britain is jockeying for position as the worlds number one power (!) with competition from the EU (France/Germany). + :java: = NULL :=> X|The Cuban missile crisis occured because of Kennedy's inept dealings with Cuba and Castro...assasination attempts, state sponsored terrorism, largest peace time buildup of strategic weapons (counter to intelligence), and the most inept thing, The Bay of Pigs Invasion. There is this notion that Kennedy stood his ground and the Soviets blinked...the Soviets "blinked" after we promised to pull our intermediate range missiles out of Turkey. The whole situation was managed so poorly, we were lucky to have survived. In my opinion Bush, or any other president, would have had to be trying to do worse, in order to have done worse. Just ordered :-) Have you ever read Clancy's "The Bear and the Dragon", excellent read too if you are into superpower stand-offs.

In addition, I'm convinced the entire episode was master politics by Kruschev. From his perspective, he couldn't really lose. If Kennedy hadn't called the bluff, the USSR would have had missiles in Cuba. (It seems to me, though, that Kruschev intended the missiles to be discovered--evidence being that the Soviets did precious little to hide what they were doing.)
