What do you use to play mp3's?
-
I have always used windows media player. I ripped my entire cd collection to mp3 files so I can listen to them while I work. If I want to listen to a whole album I drag the files from windows explorer to wmp, but it *always* re-orders the songs seemingly randomly and I have the shuffle feature turned off. Dark side of the moon just isn't the same when it plays the the songs out of order. I have to drag the songs into the correct order (which is made harder because the track number in the file name is "conveniently" hidden when I drag the songs into the playlist. It's a classic case of over-engineering a problem.) Not being able to find anything on the internet regarding this I've decided it's probably just not the right software to use. Any suggestions about other software?

I've never had a problem with the ordering, but I don't drag and drop from explorer either. If AutoPlay doesn't catch your CD, then in WMP9 go to View/Go To/Copy From CD. Click the Copy Music button at the top. It should add them to your library in the same order as the CD. Jeremy Falcon

Just kidding... but consider Quintessential Player, aka QCD - www.quinnware.com[^]. First of all, it is free. Second: it's compatible with lots of winamp plugins, and you can write easily your own. Third: it rips your cd in mp3 and other formats (ogg, mp3pro). Fourth: it automagically gets ID3 tags for your songs from the web Fifth: did i mention it is free? Sixth: it has a lot of shiny skins (try the MM3D, port from the winamp MM3D skin). Seventh: it is coded quite well, and it won't stamp your feet. Eight: aren't you tired of reading, son? get it and play yourself, it's just a couple of MB. Luca Leonardo Scorcia http://zip.to/kojak (only in Italian)

Never had problems with ordering in Windows Media Player. Why not just use the playlist features instead of all this dragging and dropping? Once you order a playlist it does not re-order itself. Otherwise Winamp 2 is the next best. Musicmatch is also reasonable. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Brian Welsch wrote: "blah blah blah, maybe a potato?" while translating my Afrikaans. (If you're a member of RIAA reading this, skip to paragraph #4) One thing to make sure of is that the MP3s' ID3 info contains track numbers. WMP defaults to ordering songs by track number. Also, what's with all the dragging? Just add the songs to your media library and / or create a playlist. Sure, Winamp is great, but I personally deal with a lot of media that WMP plays so it's just easier to have one open. (Paragraph #4) MP3's are bad, m'kay? I would never play 'em, m'kay?

I use iTune at home, well, not really that much, I use my iPod or CDs. At work, I use my iPod and WMP when I have to; I'm trying to grab one Admin so I can install iTune.

Anything else is incredible overkill for me, I don't want skins, I don't want just about any of the features in WMP other than the feature that makes the music come out of the speakers based on what I chose. Fair enough, to each his own. I don't use Winamp exactly because I find it's playlist features lacking. So Winamp sounds just up your alley :) regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Brian Welsch wrote: "blah blah blah, maybe a potato?" while translating my Afrikaans. Crikey! ain't life grand?

Ha! Thank you for the suggestion, I just downloaded, installed it and dragged my Yes- Fragile album tracks to it and it re-ordered them randomly but in a new and uniquely different way than WMP. :( I guess I'll go back to WMP, at least I understand how it works for the most part.

I am sure everyone is sick of hearing about Longhorn but I do believe the new file system is going to be an absolute killer app for music playlists. From my concept of it I see the playlists being part of the FS and not the app, which is grand IMO. I would far prefer to manage my playlists in Explorer as well. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Brian Welsch wrote: "blah blah blah, maybe a potato?" while translating my Afrikaans. Down at the bottom of the playlist window, there's a buttom marked "Misc". Right-click it, select sort, select Sort by Path and Filename.

As mentioned: use Winamp 2.x As for your Explorer-dragging issue, this is what I've noticed with it: if you select a bunch of files (ie: songs 01-12), but then have song 07 as the "focused" song when you drag (the song under your cursor when you left-click to start the drag), then when you drag into WMP, the focused song (ie: 07) becomes the top song of the playlist, followed by 08, 09...until 12, then 01, 02,...until 06. I think this is same as how Winamp works. So, what you need to do, is when you drag over a group of songs (like DSotM), then make sure you start the drag by clicking-holding on the 01 song. I've also seen situations where Explorer will organize songs with the 01 and the focused song swapped. ie: 07, 02....06, 01, 08...12 Chalk it up to a Great Mystery of Life. and USE PLAYLISTS! playlists rule!
