What do you use to play mp3's?

Heath Stewart wrote: Also, what's with all the dragging? Just add the songs to your media library and / or create a playlist. Playlist? What's that? ;) Seriously though, I find that the playlist concept is a complete waste of time for me, I have the files I can pick and choose in explorer and then select play. Anything else is incredible overkill for me, I don't want skins, I don't want just about any of the features in WMP other than the feature that makes the music come out of the speakers based on what I chose. Paragraph 4: I ripped all these tracks from stacks of CD's I've had for years so no problems there.

I am sure everyone is sick of hearing about Longhorn but I do believe the new file system is going to be an absolute killer app for music playlists. From my concept of it I see the playlists being part of the FS and not the app, which is grand IMO. I would far prefer to manage my playlists in Explorer as well. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Brian Welsch wrote: "blah blah blah, maybe a potato?" while translating my Afrikaans. Ha! Thank you for the suggestion, I just downloaded, installed it and dragged my Yes- Fragile album tracks to it and it re-ordered them randomly but in a new and uniquely different way than WMP. :( I guess I'll go back to WMP, at least I understand how it works for the most part.

Down at the bottom of the playlist window, there's a buttom marked "Misc". Right-click it, select sort, select Sort by Path and Filename.

I have always used windows media player. I ripped my entire cd collection to mp3 files so I can listen to them while I work. If I want to listen to a whole album I drag the files from windows explorer to wmp, but it *always* re-orders the songs seemingly randomly and I have the shuffle feature turned off. Dark side of the moon just isn't the same when it plays the the songs out of order. I have to drag the songs into the correct order (which is made harder because the track number in the file name is "conveniently" hidden when I drag the songs into the playlist. It's a classic case of over-engineering a problem.) Not being able to find anything on the internet regarding this I've decided it's probably just not the right software to use. Any suggestions about other software?

As mentioned: use Winamp 2.x As for your Explorer-dragging issue, this is what I've noticed with it: if you select a bunch of files (ie: songs 01-12), but then have song 07 as the "focused" song when you drag (the song under your cursor when you left-click to start the drag), then when you drag into WMP, the focused song (ie: 07) becomes the top song of the playlist, followed by 08, 09...until 12, then 01, 02,...until 06. I think this is same as how Winamp works. So, what you need to do, is when you drag over a group of songs (like DSotM), then make sure you start the drag by clicking-holding on the 01 song. I've also seen situations where Explorer will organize songs with the 01 and the focused song swapped. ie: 07, 02....06, 01, 08...12 Chalk it up to a Great Mystery of Life. and USE PLAYLISTS! playlists rule! I thought I had put all those feelings behind me, damped down my urge to break things. Yes they were horrible, all I ask is that they win the cup and beat the leafs like a rental mule every time they play them. Well they better beat them tonight. It seems like whenever they play the Leafs (going back into last year as well) they become a completely different team. It's no wonder that the CBC announcers can't get the Canucks names straight or even know the basics about the team and their style of play etc. I don't know what it is, it's like they're intimidated by them or something, or maybe it's all those buffoons that come into GM place and chant "go leafs go". ARRGGHHHH!!!! :takes anti-Leaf anger medication:

You are a cynical, cynical man Shog9 from outer space. I am hoping for the best. From the demos photo/image capabilities are being pushed and photo management is a drop in the ocean compared to music management in peoples minds, so I don't see MS missing out on it. So if you marquee-drag the files before dragging, they might show up in a "random" order depending on when each file was selected. But if you select one, then hit Shift+End to select the rest, then drag, the logic to the ordering will be more apparent. --Mike-- Ericahist | CP SearchBar v2.0.2 | Homepage | RightClick-Encrypt | 1ClickPicGrabber Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering? When I use Media Player, I always do a File/Open. I always find that I have to hold shift, select the last track, and then click on the first track to have them open in the proper order. This is the same effect as selecting the last track, holding shift and hitting the HOME key. You can see the order that it will open the files in the actual from the "File Name" text box. If you select the first file, then hold shift END to select to the end, WMP puts the last track first, then the other tracks in the proper order. I've never understood the logic of how it orders these, but I've always worked around it. :(
I, for one, do not think the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.

I either use the media library part of WMP (just point it at my music folder and it works everything out fine) or (and this is the one I use most) Tray Player[^]. I use the keyboard shortcuts to the max, and this[^] is the screen footprint (on the taskbar). Stuart Dootson 'Java, Basic, who cares - it's all a bunch of tree-hugging hippy cr*p'
