Vacation + Kids...

I am seeking input from fellow cpians who are married with children:). Most years I take at least one nice vacation with my wife. We've been to Hawaii, Yellowstone, Italy, Caribean cruise, etc. This year, we have not been able to take such a vacation. We had planned to take a trip to London in the summer but I blew my knee out and we had to cancel. Anyway, in the past my mother kept the kids while my wife and I went away. (I have 3 kids, all girls ages 4, 3 and 9 months.) My mother is now working again and cannot keep the kids except during the summer, so that leaves us trying to decide what type of vacation to take with the kids. I am in desperate need of a vaction. So far in the past 12 months, I have been out of work for 10 days. 5 days when I blew my knee out and 5 days when my daughter was born. So, what do other people with kids do for a nice vacation? I think it will be easier when the kids are older, but I sure could use a break now. Thanks in advance. Matt Gullett

Having only 1 child doesn't compare to having three, but when Ian was young we took vacations that didn't involve a lot of travelling. That meant exploring some of the local areas that we always wanted to check out but never had the time to. We basically didn't fly anywhere and limited driving to a couple hours a day. I'm also not one for amusement parks and that ilk, so (at the time living in San Diego), we travelled up the coast and then into the San Bernardino mountains. In fact, Ian took his first steps at the Golden Bear cottage in Big Bear. It can be nice doing window shopping, checking out local historical stuff, playing on the beach, taking a hike through the woods, anything that's low key where bathroom facilities and a place to sit and drink some tea/coffee are readily available. I can see how it would be hard to come up with a vacation idea with kids at those ages. Are there any long lost relatives you can go visit? Visiting relatives is always a great way to come by some instant babysitters while you and your wife go out and play, especially if they have kids of their own that are old enough to babysit. ;) My code isn't buggy. Those are all fleatures.

4 years old, 3 years old and 9 months old. Sorry for the confusion. Relatives are good, but only for a few hours. I seriously need at least 2-3 days away from here. Good thought, though.

I have two kids close in age to yours .. 4 & 5 1/2 years old. They have always been good travelers ... airplanes, car trips, didnt matter ... although for car trips it helps to have one of those video setups. Most of our vacations have been at beach resort type places which is great because the kids are perfectly happy playing in the sand everyday and then we go out for a really nice dinner. Some advice I have are .. 1. Keep it simple, dont plan a lot of activities ... kids make their own fun. 2. Dont pack a lot of toys and entertainment ... instead purchase it all on-site. There are several reasons for this. First, it is less to pack and with 3 kids you are carrying a lot just with the clothes and baby stuff. Second, the kids always love getting presents and new toys .. the cost is irrelevant to them .. a new $2 toy is more fun than an old $100 toy. Of course you may have to bring a few "essential toys" ... my daughter doesnt go anywhere without her stuffed llama :-). 3. (Kids or not) I always tell people that instead of carrying stuff back from vacation they should look into shipping it back by UPS or Postal Service. It's nice going through the airport with only the kids and on carry-on for the expensive stuff.

My wife and I just had our fifth child two weeks ago. We decided after numbers three and four (twins), two yeas ago, that a ‘relaxing vacation’ would have to wait for about 18 years.:sigh: Now we simply concentrate on vacations and weekend outings that will give our children good memories of their childhood. I have my parents to thank for many of those good memories including several trips to Yellowstone.:) We were very lucky to live only a few hundred miles away from Yellowstone. My parents never had a lot of money so our vacations/trips were always simple and close to home. Nothing is better than the memories of a Saturday fishing trip or a weekend camp out under the stars. Now I live on the other side of the good old USA (The east coast) and there is a lot more to with my children. My kids love to visit civil war sites, boating on the Chesapeake Bay, the science center in Baltimore and pretty much the whole Baltimore Inner Harbor, the zoo, the Smithsonian Museum and, of course camping and fishing and probably another hundred things that I can't think of right now... Now if your looking for a good vacation for both young and old. You can never go wrong with Disney World. I took my family and parents there last fall and my parents (in their late 60’s) loved it just as much (maybe even more:rolleyes:) than the kids.

What your kids will most appreciate is not seeing some fancy place, but to spend time with you. I have two ( working on the third, having fun but not success so far ), and we only go on holiday every second or third year, but I couldn't imagine doing something without them. We tend to just take the boat to the mainland, get in our car and drive around to places that are not too far apart, spend time with the kids, go to fun parks, you name it. The kids make a holiday, and they will be happy where-ever you go, they will just be glad to be with you all day. Christian I have drunk the cool-aid and found it wan and bitter. - Chris Maunder
