San Francisco and Yosemite
-
Hi All, I'm flying out to San Francisco in February for a little Family Reunion type thing as my sister is passing through as it's the closest she's been to Scotland in over a year. Anyway, I've only got one week out there and I was wondering what to do and see. I don't know much about San Francisco other than its got the Golden Gate Bridge, tram cars and it suffers the occasional earthquake. I've also been recommended to go to a place called the Cheesecake factory. Can anyone offer any good suggestions? Also, I recenly discovered that Yosemite National Park is not too far away and I'm just wondering if its any good in February (or should I arrange a second trip and come back one summer). If I do go to Yosemite it will be for a few days. What would be the best accomodation at that time of year? I don't think I'll want to go camping during February (Normally, if I go camping then it is in Spain during the summer so its usually quite warm). I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. --Colin Mackay--

Also be sure to check out Golden Gate park, which has nice botanical, rose, and tree gardens. Cheesecake Factory is a chain restaurnt. The food is good and the portions are big. If you want some food that is more local (i.e. no tourists), be sure to check out: Thai/Asian food: Citrus Club (in the Haight) Neecha: (Thai food, on corner of Sutter and Steiner) Nirvana: (Asian fusion, in the Castro - the gay part of town). Italian: Any restaurant in North Beach. I'm sure others can chime in with their favorites. As for Yosemite, it is about 3-4 hours away, and it will be cold. I've never been there in the winter, so you should check out their website to see if any part of the park is closed. You can also go to Lake Tahoe, which is also 4 hours away. Tahoe has some world class ski resorts. Have fun :)

My Aunt used to live just west of Yosemite and in Feb you can count on at least part of it closed. If you want to see more than San Fancisco (and you could spend the whole time there), you may want to check out some of the state parks, I remember one called "Big Tree" that was nice to see. For other history items "Columbia, Ca" is not to far away. It was the second largest city in CA during the gold rush days. Just found this site, It could have interesting other info. http://www.city-data.com/city/Columbia-California.html "Don't be so anti-american, would you? I'm not completely certain of the name but there's a museum at the Presidio (I think it's called the Hall of the Legion of Honour). Worth a look. If you have a car take a drive down Highway 380. Beautiful scenery and you're close enough to the Pacific to spit in it :) Caveat - the last time I was there was 1986 so these are old memories Rob Manderson http://www.mindprobes.net **Paul Watson wrote:**What sense would you most dislike loosing? I lived in San Francisco for 2 years and lived in San Jose (45 minutes south) for many years. SF is the best city in America (IMHO). The obvious tourist things to do include Golden Gate bridge (drive over the bridge to the Marin county observation point and look back at the city from there - beautiful). While on the Marin side, spend the morning in Sausalito and spend the afternoon driving up to Napa county and do the Vineyard taste tours. Spend the rest of the day driving around the north bay and come back to the city via the Bay bridge - take in dinner that night in a restaurant in Berkely. There is also a Sake factory on the Berkeley side with cool brewery tours. Spend a couple days riding the cable cars to the various points of interest - Market Street embarcadero center, fisherman's wharf, etc. Check out the Palace of Fine Arts and the Exploratorium. Pier 39 is a nice place to go for lunch. Check out the Coit tower. Do the Alcatraz tour. Enjoy!
