The only thing I can think of that would be classier would be to have attended the world premier in Wellington :) I'd hate to be in Jacksons shoes right now. After 'Heavenly Creatures', 'The Frighteners' and now 'LOTR' - what can he possibly do to top himself? On the other hand, what a life's work! I suspect that much of the quality of LOTR is that it wasn't a 'Hollywood' movie. Yes, paid for by Hollywood, but I can't imagine a Spielberg version of LOTR (and I don't want to*). Yes I've read the commentaries and understood the economics that say a 300 million dollar movie made in New Zealand (or Australia) is half the price of the same movie made in the USA. But that argument misses the point that a movie made in NZ or Aus by a non Hollywood director is almost by definition not going to be a Hollywood movie. If LOTR had been made by a Hollywood director I don't believe it would have been half as good as it is. This is not an anti american sentiment. It's merely a notice of the difference between the way Hollywood approaches a subject and the way directors outside of Hollywood approach the same subject. *With very few exceptions I consider the movies of Spielberg to be overhyped saccharine.
