Hi everybody You know probably the great time when you are to release public the first version of your program: you are proud of it and you want to sell it to become the next Bill Gates (!!! :wtf: ). But I have a major issue: my installation package size is 27Mo. And there will be a free version (same size). So, the problem is that my Internet provider won't accept a big charge on its server and he will shut down my site :(( . I need to provide a solution to download the package somewhere (several places is a plus :) ) (It is actually a php site) Could you provide me some tips suggestions or solutions? I'm sure you, great gurus and developers, have already been confronted to this problem. Many thanks in advance Best regards Guy LECOMTE

Submit it to shareware sites like Tucows and CNET Downloads. They provide hosting and mirrors of applications. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Brian Welsch wrote: "blah blah blah, maybe a potato?" while translating my Afrikaans. Crikey! ain't life grand? Einstein says...

If you plan on being in business doing this then you need to spend some money and pay for web hosting. You can submit to tucows etc and they will host the file, but you have no control over how long they take to place it and more and more often those sorts of sites are requiring payment before they will do anything which brings you back to spending money one way or the other. You can't really make money without spending money.

Slice your file into files of 2Mo/3Mo each.

As John wrote, I would recommend using a decent online hosting service. There are many, and most have a range of plans with a variety of options. I can personally recommend netfirms.com, I've used it for my own business and a couple other hosted websites I've created for people. They have a freebie option, but I don't think it will work for you because it only allows for 25MB of space and no PHP. But the next level up is $5/month, gives you 50MB of space and PHP, and some other features. Five bucks a month is not a tremendous outlay to get yourself started. Check around though, there are others that are comparable. Good luck with your release! Cheers, Carl Disclaimer: I don't work for netfirms, and they offer no referral bonus.

How does that solve the problem? Whether there is one 27MB file, or nine 3MB files, the Web server is still going to realize a big hit.

You should check out www.exaltedhosting.com cheap as heck, with decent bandwidth, PHP, ASP [not .NET .. they use *nix], and other stuff. As well as MySQL databases. Purty good.. specially considering the price. Someday I might just buy a server there for uhh.. i think its like $30/month and put on all kinds of .NET stuff. :-D run myself a hugeeee server, perhaps letting others sub-host off me and recoup some of that 30/month ... though by the time i have that kinda money to spend on web... there'll probably be a huge .NET setup in the *nix world... I hope..

1and1.com[^] is running a promotion; 3 years of free hosting complete with PHP, MySQL, Perl, etc, without any banner ads, popups or spam. 500 mb of space and 5 gb of bandwidth per month. I can tell that you're a bit apprehensive about spending any money (strange choice for a business, but oh well). This would give you a low cost entry and profesional platform for distribution. And you could always upgrade the plan if needed. One word of caution; the control panel they provide for your account is a bit ackward if you ask me. It took me like 20 minutes to figure out where the account information for FTP and SSH was displayed. P.S. I'm in no way affiliated with this company. It's just a good deal, especially considering the lack of popups and banner ads. It's a full-fledged hosting account. Jim QTExtender - The OFFICIAL addon for QuoteTracker.

Yes but the way you are using the bandwidth is different statistically and ok regarding the way you are supposed to use it.
