Untapped Talent
-
One thing that CodeProject has taught me, is that there is alot of programming talent in the world. I've got this idea for a website where you can post a programming spec and people can bid to do the work. Each bidder would have an account and build a reputation like ebay, so if you did good work you could charge a premium. I guess its also a bit like google answers. The site would have specific rules for the content of the specifications, and coding style (ie lots of comments, pascal style layout for C#, option strict on for vb etc). I have alot more ideas, but just wanted a quick reality check, or to see if its been done! If so, could someone point me in the right direction. I would definitely be interested if anyone who would like to get involved, if you thinks its a good idea.

You mean like www.rentacoder.com, www.smeoutsource.com and www.programmingbids.com?

Like others have pointed out, it's been done.... However, it has yet to be done well; mainly down to the fact that most people have unrealistic expectations of how much it costs and how long it takes to develop software well. I also love the speed with which other CPians flock to mock those that post random thought patterns, instead of doing a little research! Thanks for the reality check!

Yeah, I've already had my nose rubbed in the dirt, but the point you make is interesting. It strikes me, these sites (from my quick glance at them) are very commercialised and little more than meatmarkets. I was thinking of more of a community spirit like CP. A bit like open source you get paid for. Still, where money is involved community spirit never lasts long.

There is a site somewhere (several even) that has something like a 'bidding on open source' idea. Basically you'd say 'I need program x and I want to pay 10$ for it'. Then someone else would come and say 'I'd like that program too, I'll chip in 20$'. So the total amount of money on a project adds up, and then someone can say 'ok, I'll do it for this amount'. The software itself was then released open source. I thought that was a neat idea. But like you say, where money is the driving force, 'community' never (as far as I've seen) lasts.
