I think it is worth it for their reputation. I also think MS should provide free anti-virus software with live updates as a free service as well. The costs of a 3 year subscription to Norton or McAfee just about cost more then the OS. -Andy Brummer

I'm really kind of suprised that Microsoft hasn't. I guess the problem is that they would have a hard time changing for utilities to protect their own products. If I ever release a product with an exploit in it, I would wouldn't expect any third party to write software to clean up users systems for my mistake. -Andy Brummer

Because of the spam-marketting practises most now take part in, because I've have to fix too many PCs completely screwed up by them, and because far too many problems are caused by having them running (so much software nowadays starts by telling you to disable anti-virus software). It only makes the average user believe they are safe and act less carefully - a properly cared for system should not need anti-virus protection.

That is especially troubling since it appears that nothing has come of it so far as far as Microsoft products are concerned. I personally keep my systems clean using a free anti-virus product. I do think it is obscene that regular users like my parents need to spend more on software to protect their systems then the software that they use on their systems. All they need is email and web browsing that is cheap easy to use. I just think that security including utilities to detect and cleanup viruses should be part of any OS. -Andy Brummer
