new company name

David Cunningham wrote: There are pros and cons to each approach however (unique word vs. generic term). The main reason I choose the generic name was because I was hoping to make the software I know now, and then switch over to games/both. It works for MS, but I'm sure they have guru marketing guys [edit] and money [/edit] to help them pull it off. I suppose after thinking about it, I could just to have two separate companies or a subsidiary. What are your thoughts on this? BTW, thanks for the info! Jeremy Falcon
I don't have many products, but I have my own small company where I develop software and also works a bit as consultant. Company name is Nimo Software (nimo.dk) but I only use that for mail. I have made some small games for Windows CE, for which I got the domains cesoft.dk and cesoftware.dk ;) At the moment I have just finished a new application, a photo album / organizer thingy calles ShotKeeper, and for that i got shotkeeper.net and shotkeeper.biz As I dont have many products, I find it works fine to have a seperate website/domain name for each one... - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!" ShotKeeper, my Photo Album / Organizer Application[^]

That was kinda my thinking on it, but girlfriends have ways of convincing you of things that well... you know. :) I did stress it has to be easy to spell also - don't want to lose business over the wrong URL. How did you come up with the name Dundas? Jeremy Falcon
How about www.edddownloadnnnaughtypppictures.com? Heard in Bullhead City - "You haven't lost your girl -
you've just lost your turn..." [sigh] So true... -

I figure I've spent somewhere around $2M trying to make the name 'Dundas' mean something to our target market, when something like 'ChartingComponents.com' probably would've been way more efficient. There are pros and cons to each approach however (unique word vs. generic term). For example investing in a brand over time gives you something of value, 'Xerox' is probably the best example of a made up word having great value. I'm sure it cost a fortune to establish it though. The local Toronto pizza mega-chain is called 'Pizza Pizza' and it's not too hard to figure out what they do. David David

To make a long story short, I lost the .com TLD of the old one I was using, so instead of coughing up $2,000 to ICANN :( to get it back I'm trying to find a new name. This is my progress so far... eteras.com To be pronounced similar to the LOTR city of Edoras in Rohan. Please vote 1 if it sucks or 5 if it doesn't suck for an ISV name. Oh, and feel free to be blunt. [edit] If you do a whois on it, it is me that owns it. I just registered it for one year while I decide if it's worth keeping. [/edit] Jeremy Falcon
Hi Jeremy, Well, it's your company, it's your software, it's your alpha brain-wave patterns, it's your blood, sweat and tears....it's your product, your services, your client's and ultimately your money....so why are you looking for so much of other's approval? :) anyway, just like you I too find it easier to handle COM and Visual C++ and am bloody and gibbering when it comes to actually naming my software company and registering a TLD. I would vote a 3 for your's though( a 5 if you are offering me a job):-O. tell me do you read Douglas Adams? What Sector of the galaxy does the green-and-blue planet comes from that also lies on the faultline of the Improbability axis and can be visualized as a string of sausages? that's what I came up with 2 yrs of lateral thinking(but then I also have linguistic dyslexia) what I think I'm gonna go along with when it comes to my turn under the axe. :rose:

A 1 because it sounds 'faceless' if that makes sense. I can't associate the name with anything. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

One test is to say it out loud in a crowded party and see how many people can remember it the next day, let alone how to spell it when they go looking for your web site. How easy it is to pronounce is surprisingly another factor. Eteras.com gets a one on the first aspect, and a two on the second since I'm not really sure by looking at the name how to pronounce it (your customers would not have read this post for the explanation). ShowProgramming.com was named when I was writing show control software for computerized lighting. Unfortunately, it's not terribly relevant to what I do these days, and I've been working on names, too, so I feel your pain. :-) Christopher Duncan Today's Corporate Battle Tactic Unite the Tribes: Ending Turf Wars for Career and Business Success The Career Programmer: Guerilla Tactics for an Imperfect World
