Two sets of people will be celebrating - Irish and Iranian.
My neighbours think I am crazy - but they don't know that I have a trampoline. All they see my head bobbing up and down over the fence every five seconds

What is the starting point for the calendar? The birth/death of Mohammed? A decree by a Persian king? A major battle or celestial event? Whatever the source, Happy New Year!:-D Will Build Nuclear Missile For Food - No Target Too Small

However, I think we have a pretty good idea as to which set of people is going to do the drinking. :-D Remember, even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.
Actually thats exactly what I wrote bfore thinking it through and replaced drinking with celebrating. :-D

Hey, good to see you. About our conevsrsation about Iran and Persia, you were right. Iran is the new name for Persia from about 100 years. :-) Mazy "Man is different from animals in that he speculates, a high risk activity." - Edward Hoagland
:) Eventhough I show signs of senility every now and then, I still remember some things.. :-D I even knew how to write my name in Farsi once. Farsi is the official name of your language, right? In Swedish it's called Persiska = Persian in English. I remember wanting to be left handed when writing in Farsi - it's really hard to write from right to left! After that I felt I could sympathize with left handed people :) -- Futue te et ipsum caballum.

Hmm, so if I have a cat who's part Persian, I should wish him a happy new year? :-D Remember, even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

Same as Arabs but they use Moon rotation around earth but we use rotating of earth around sun for counting. :-) Roger Wright wrote: A decree by a Persian king? We had another another calender before revolution, it was in about year 2500 and I think its source was for the first great Persian King named Koorosh which establish great Persia, from Egypt to some places near China if I don't make mistake. Happy New Year Just curious. Does the day have a name in Iranian ? " Invading armies can be stopped but nothing can stop an idea whose time has come " - Voltaire
The name is "Nourooz" means "New day" in English! A. Riazi

Mazdak wrote: Starting his travel from Mecca to Medineh. I have to admit that my knowledge of thr region is terrible... I've tried several times to wade through the Quran, but it's so hard - there are so few common references shared by our cultures, even though they grew from the same roots. Are there other books that might be more understandable by a Westerner which deal with the life and times of Mohammed? Mazdak wrote: great Persia, from Egypt to some places near China if I don't make mistake. The Persian Kingdom was a major one, and a very advanced one culturally, if what I've read is correct. There was a time when the Middle East was the cultural center of the world, but it has since declined into barbarism - what happenned? I don't mean that as a criticism, just an observation as an amateur historian. Our history books don't dwell on it, but something must have happenned to cause the region to fall from its previously elevated position. Western society had its Dark Ages, and we were set back hundreds of years because of that, but I have no knowledge of what happenned to yours... Care to enlighten me? It's a funny thing about middle age - in school I hated history, but now I crave understanding about our world and its cultures, their birth, rise, and decline.
