That’ll be £80,000* please.... WHAT do you give someone who’s been proved innocent after spending the best part of their life behind bars, wrongfully convicted of a crime they didn’t commit?[^] Well, all I can say is that this is totally outrageous. There are no words strong enough to describe it. *£80,000 = US$144,000 or €116,000

And I suppose the dearly beloved Mr. Blinkett will pay back the current market value of the house his family couldn't afford to keep ? Oh - and yet another argument against the death penalty. The tigress is here :-D

Just in case you haven't heard of this guy, he is a government minister who has upset everyone in the country several times with tricks like this. It's long past time the PM got rid of him. The tigress is here :-D

Blunkett’s fight has been described as “outrageous”, “morally repugnant” and the “sickest of sick jokes”, but his spokesmen in the Home Office say it’s a completely “reasonable course of action” as the innocent men and women would have spent the money anyway on food and lodgings if they weren’t in prison. The government deems the claw-back ‘Saved Living Expenses’. Except they havent be earning, and are unlikely to ever be able to follow their chosen career. It's sick, utterly sick. Any compensation should be just that - compensation for having the state take your life away from you - not treated as lost income. You can't buy a life. Maybe we should charge Blunkett for disabled access provided with our money?

In recent years, however, numerous studies have found that one in seven people sent to death row are later proven innocent. And in one disturbing recent case, a prisoner was 48 hours from execution when he was proven innocent. Does that mean the death penalty is wrong or that our justice system is so screwed up? For that matter let's not even have jail, because some might get locked up who was innocent. Fix the problem... Sorry over-paid lawyers, sorry judges, and stupid people on juries.

Bush gets blamed for a lot of stuff, and although I believe he supports the death penalty, I would hardly call him it's number one proponent. I presume you say this because of the number of death penalty's that were carried out in Texas during his administration. If so, I would point out that although he chose not to stop any, he did not pass any of those sentances, and all who were executed had exhausted their appeals (a process that can require 25-30 years). To blame bush for merely concurring with the original jury, and all appeals courts involved, is a bit extreme. Needless Bush-bashing methinks...(it is not as if Texas was the only state -or country- that carried out death sentances in that time frame):| Power corrupts and PowerPoint corrupts absolutely. - Vint Cerf

This is what i understand from this crap. It seems like governement have found new TaxPayers. Also i am curious who found that these people are not guilty. If it is the governement, it will makes sense for him to get a bonus for "freeing" you. But now since the people are pissed off the governement will spend less ressources in tring to find if you are innocent or not. The moral of the history: dont keep money on lawers, you will loose it anywa y X|

In recent years, however, numerous studies have found that one in seven people sent to death row are later proven innocent. And in one disturbing recent case, a prisoner was 48 hours from execution when he was proven innocent. In the last 25 years, 102 innocent people have been released from death row. http://www.aclu.org/DeathPenalty/DeathPenalty.cfm?ID=9961&c=65[^] And who is the number one proponent of death sentence: Bush! jhaga --------------------------------- Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new. Maybe people who support the death penalty should go and talk to the families of those who are found to be innocent after they die ? The tigress is here :-D
