That’ll be £80,000* please.... WHAT do you give someone who’s been proved innocent after spending the best part of their life behind bars, wrongfully convicted of a crime they didn’t commit?[^] Well, all I can say is that this is totally outrageous. There are no words strong enough to describe it. *£80,000 = US$144,000 or €116,000

In recent years, however, numerous studies have found that one in seven people sent to death row are later proven innocent. And in one disturbing recent case, a prisoner was 48 hours from execution when he was proven innocent. In the last 25 years, 102 innocent people have been released from death row. http://www.aclu.org/DeathPenalty/DeathPenalty.cfm?ID=9961&c=65[^] And who is the number one proponent of death sentence: Bush! jhaga --------------------------------- Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new. Does that mean the death penalty is wrong or that our justice system is so screwed up? For that matter let's not even have jail, because some might get locked up who was innocent. Fix the problem... Sorry over-paid lawyers, sorry judges, and stupid people on juries.

Bush gets blamed for a lot of stuff, and although I believe he supports the death penalty, I would hardly call him it's number one proponent. I presume you say this because of the number of death penalty's that were carried out in Texas during his administration. If so, I would point out that although he chose not to stop any, he did not pass any of those sentances, and all who were executed had exhausted their appeals (a process that can require 25-30 years). To blame bush for merely concurring with the original jury, and all appeals courts involved, is a bit extreme. Needless Bush-bashing methinks...(it is not as if Texas was the only state -or country- that carried out death sentances in that time frame):| Power corrupts and PowerPoint corrupts absolutely. - Vint Cerf

If it is the governement, it will makes sense for him to get a bonus for "freeing" you. But now since the people are pissed off the governement will spend less ressources in tring to find if you are innocent or not.
