Adware??? on CP???

Agreed. Not in this person's case, it would seem, but in general, for sure. Just as every budding teenager gets the talk of the "birds and the bees" at some point in time, so should we in general be sitting down first-time internet users and spelling out the way things are. I tried this with my sister, brother-in-law, and my mother at different points, with varying results. - Jason (SonorkID 100.611) The Code Project - Orange makes the art grow fonder

:-DAgree completely... I recently did a bit of "servicing" of some PCs belonging to friends of my wife's. The worse offender was riddled with viruses and enough "free" utilities that the system tray area was almost half way across the screen (Win98)... ...the best bit though was that they had gone for 6 months clicking OK on a message box on bootup and eventually it just became part of the "starting the computer" routine... the message???... "[keyloggername].patch.reg could not be applied to the registry. The file may be corrupted or...." (can't remember exactly but you get the gist???.. Plugins to IE they don't remember "installing", about 60% of the browser window real estate left over after all the plugins have had their way with a new IE window; unused icons all over the desktop they don't remember putting there; about half a dozen "suspicious" values in the CurrentVersion\Run's which, when deleted via RegEdit, ceased to add minutes to Windows booting time; and, of course, a field day for AdAware. - Jason (SonorkID 100.611) The Code Project - Orange makes the art grow fonder

Hey, I was on the main page and clicked on the link for the thread below and my Adware/Spyware blocker said that it had blocked the download of "Avenue A"... There do seem to be a couple of ads that are hosted off server. By the virtue of my hosts file these are all redirected to 127.0.0.1. I don't believe the CP team would have anything to do with this kind of stuff, but of course they won't have a lot of control of ads that are hosted off-site. Might be worth sending an email to webmaster@codeproject.com - just to make sure they are aware. Someone has brought this up before and Chris said he wouldn't put anything like that on CP. Are you the only one that uses your PC? There are hundreds of different malware and crapware on the net these days that unexperienced websurfers install without even knowing. If I were you I would run an updated Adware in safemode (assuming a windows os) or something. Later, JoeSox "When in doubt, tell the truth. I brought it up it was an ad for a cybersex chat site or w/e something to that extent. Who ever did it was using javascript and did a image src change through javascript, thats why js is banned from the forums on CP. -Steven Hicks
