Honest critiques of my new design please?

Hey.. I sat up all night last week doing a new design for my business's website. Our target market is the Australian real estate industry. You can see the new design here: http://www.netlab.com.au/newdesign.htm[^] No prizes to guess the URL of the current site ;) I'm interested in people's opinions on layout, ease-of-use, impact, cleanliness of the design, etc. Any opinion is appreciated and will be taken into account in any update to the design or complete redesign. Incidentally, it's my first site that has been laid out entirely with CSS. It's a little bit broken in Mozilla at the moment, but nothing major that I shouldn't be able to fix. It's a clean design, but there seems to be a lack of contrast between the background image and the foreground's text color, making the site a bit difficult to read. Or maybe it's just my crappy eyes. :) Jim QTExtender - The OFFICIAL addon for QuoteTracker.

Nice layout, but the background could be a little lighter, or the text a shade darker. The colors work well enough, but have too little contrast for easy reading. I don't know the market there, but it doesn't exactly shout Real Estate to me; not sure if that needs fixing or just displays my ignorance. Site looks pretty good. But if your like me you want to know what's wrong not what's right. I think the logo is too big. It should fit on the screen and it should also stand out more. I'm not sure what's going on with the line at the top of the screen. It made me think that there was more to see, but I wasn't able to scroll up that high. Also I think your boxes like the log in box should be a little more defined. Finally the netlab logo looks way out of place. It's the only black text on the page. The same goes for the "win more listings" green text. Hope that's helpful! jerry

I agree with patnsnaudy about the bars at top, however other than that it looks pretty decent. Signature under construction.

- Like others have said, the bar at the top makes you feel like you should scroll up. 2) The vertical lettering on the left is a waste in my opinion. It takes up alot of space, and you have to crane your neck to read it. 3) I think the logo design is excellent, but I'd probably place it top left instead of top right. (for familiarity sake) Then I would move the login form up, so it's more visible and easier/quicker to access. 4) The grey "ad" takes too much attention away from the rest of the page. 5) I think the layout of the news blurbs running down the middle of the page is great. (The titles stand out well) 6) Text in the headers on the right hand side panels (client login, test.) is kinda blurry. I would sharpen them up. 7) I might try switching the hyperlink text effects around, so that it's normal text during no hover, and underlined with dashes during hover.

I agree with the first response to your msg. I definitely think you should have more contrast between your foreground and background. This is really hard to achieve with a light backgnd (from experience). But it'll look great if you can find a way to work it out. I agree with the other comments. But specifically the white text with the grey outline on the light grey background is especially blury. One of the design books I looked at suggested doing the entire page in grey scale before adding the colors so that you get the contrast right. Not that it would be too far off from the current color scheme, but it might help with picking some bolder colors to add them in after you have adjusted the contrast.
