I was 15 or 16, I think. It was at a computer fair, a really tiny one here in Cape Town. Creative Labs had the biggest stand, at the entrance, and they had their latest, greatest, niftiest and fabbest piece of tech with them; the Soundblaster 16! Oooooh, that was so l33t back then. I was with my dad and some mates but I was the only one brave enough to get up on the raised stand and enter the karaoke competition. Now, I may embelish but... In this round I was up against a big, black, fat lady. A tall, thin weed of a white man. A girl my age who was awfully unpretty (but I was 15 and desperate so she was gorgeous). A spotty boy brat of about 11 with shocking blonde hair and finally, the donkey from Shrek... ok, ok, not the donkey from Shrek, but the rest is true, I swear. The big, black, fat lady looked like a dead ringer for Diana Ross, thankfully her voice was a dead ringer for Stevie Wonder after a castration and she faded into her own embarassment half way through the song. The tall, thin weed of a white man was half ok, except he reminded everyone of a serial killer and did not score any popularity votes. People clapped just in case he whipped out a machine gun in retribution for not clapping. The girl my age chickened out and ran wailing from the stage. A pity, her wailing could have been perfect for that middle bit of the song. Then it was my turn. The beat started, the bouncing ball did it's thing and I sang the song. I even hit the high note and made a passable impression of a heart breaking. My friends thought it was hilarious but the crowd was impressed and at the end I was a shoe in for winning the Soundblaster 16. *clap* *clap* *clap* Then came the 11 year old kid. Boy do I hate this kid. If I met him in the street tomorrow I would demand my unfairly stolen SB16! Can you spell restraining order? You see, half way through his witheringly bad rendition of Achy Breaky Heart, his balls dropped, his voice broke and he became a man! Just my bloody luck. The kid got the sympathy vote and won. Argh! So there. My shame. Those are nothing, in fact I rather like most of those songs except American Life and Party All the Time. I once karaoked Achy Breaky Heart in front of hundreds of people to win a Sound Blaster 16, I lost which makes the memory even more painful.
