... and those that would like to: what is your favourite song to play on the guitar or what song would you like to know how to play? I'm expecially thinking about those songs that require you to use your finger-picking skills, for instance like "Babe, I'm gonna leave you". I'm looking for some ideas to broaden my "repertoire" so any ideas would be welcome :-)

Pink Floyd's "Is There Anybody Out There?" from "The Wall" Here is short WAV file of me playing it[^] Please hold your insults - I had just clipped my right-hand fingernails a few hours earlier - deadly for classical or finger-style playing. It is an arpeggiated Am chord where the root note advances by mostly half-steps. An excellent finger-style practice piece. The tablature is here: Is There ANybody Out There tablature[^] edit: Weird - it sounded fine in sndrec32 before I ULed it but when I tested the link and it played in WinAmp, it sounds like it is going through a distortion pedal. Kind of cool :)

That's about the only one I can play these days, it sorts of keep sticking to the fingers so that when I pick up the guitar every second year, I can still play it without too many problems. Weird... "After all it's just text at the end of the day. - Colin Davies "For example, when a VB programmer comes to my house, they may say 'does your pool need cleaning, sir ?' " - Christian Graus

Yeah - it is more of a guitar excercise than a song, but when I first heard it in 79 I loved it and knew I had to play it. A few years later, I started playing the guitar and learned to play that from listening to the song. It is absolutely the easiest song to play that still sounds rich and full.

"Street Spirit" by Radiohead is a great song to finger-pick... Uses a Am/Em/C9 arpeggio chord sequence.

I like the intro/verse to Tesla's "What you give". It's easier fingerpicked. After the acoustic intro/verse thing it just rocks. I'm a fan of dual guitarist though. nay

I love playing some of the longer Metallica songs--And Justice For All, Master of Puppets, To Live Is To Die, etc. They have lots of interesting changes that make them fun. I also like playing their more melodic stuff--Sanitarium, Fade To Black, One... they're just VERY satisfying when you nail it. Of course, if you don't like Metallica this doesn't help. A very fun one to play is The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin--but you gotta tune your guitar VERY oddly to get it right (something like DADGAD... can't remember off the top of my head). There's lots of Zep that's fun to play, and not particularly hard once you learn it. Black Dog, Stairway, Over The Hills and Far Away... fun stuff.

Playing 'Landslide' and 'Dust in the Wind' keeps my finger picking in shape. You should consider learning different finger picking styles, and then incorporate them in your own tunes!

I enjoy the one done by Mannheim Steamroller!:-D Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

It's very good, but the one by Beggar's Opera is also very nice. Want to borrow the CD? /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Articles | Freeware | Music ravib@ravib.com
