Can Yoga reduce sleep requirement? I was told there're drugs that let you stay awake for, say, a day (24 hours), then you're going to crash and sleep like a baby. But there're many side effects for that. I was also told that if you practise Yoga long enough you're going to be able to get by on a 5 hours sleep a day schedule. Is there anything I can quote on? Preferably from professional medical community? Thanks in advance. Norman Fung

From personal experience, yes, Yoga can reduce sleep requirements. Because I always fall asleep in a yoga class, therefore I require less of my usual sleep! Marc Microsoft MVP, Visual C# MyXaml MyXaml Blog

I don't know of any professional sources you can quote, but my experience with other forms of meditation indicates that deep meditation DOES reduce the amount of sleep that I need. Will

This link[^] says: "...a 30-minute-a-day yoga practice can actually reduce the amount of sleep you need each night by up to twice the amount of time you spend doing it." There's a watch - supposedly designed at NASA - that enables you to take "power naps" where you sleep just until you get to the point of falling into deep sleep. This is supposed to allow you to work much more time on much less sleep. Cheers, Tom Archer "Use what talents you possess. I was trying to find it now and can't. It was something I stumbled onto a couple of months ago. Basically, it monitors your blood flow and pulse and sounds an alarm when you're about to fall into a deep sleep. I'll send a URL if I can find the site. It's not a joke, actually. 'speed' as sold on the black market is just amphetamine. The army has been giving it to soldiers since the 1960's so they wouldn't need as much sleep. In 'regular' pharmacies one of the brand names is 'Captagon', although it's no longer available without prescription where I live (Europe).

So, afterall, is there medical evidence of any sort that indicates the "extent" to which Yoga can help to reduce sleep requirement? 30 minutes Yoga = 60 minutes of sleep? How about two hours of Yoga, does that equate to 4 hours of sleep? Norman Fung

Yeah well I never said it was healthy :) Your body can handle once every few months though. Oh and don't be scared of drugs because of a dea website - they're paid to fight drugs, they couldn't just undermine their own business now could they? (mind you, I'm not saying that that woman is in any way fake - meth is no good over the mid- to long term, that's for sure).
