could .NET help linux?
-
Given that .NET could run on any platform, if it is adopted as well as MFC is, could that not provide a real bust for linux? Since one of the main issues with linux, is the lack of user applications and the reluctant of developers to develop for multiple platform, it seem if .NET gets wildly adopted, it will be really good for linux. Add that to java, linux may have a rather bright future. Or am i missing something? No matter how many times u take a dump, u can never accumulate more than your mother. West African proverb(a favorite of my mother).

<my rant> No self respecting open source "programmer" or organization would ever use Microsoft's "evil" software. Even if the software is far superior to whatever alternative may be. </my rant> I my point is: .NET will do little to further Linux cause. Mike M WinInsider.com - News for Microsoftonians

So all the programmers at Ximian and elsewhere that worked on Mono have no self-respect? I understand what you're saying; I just don't think that all open-source advocates are the maniacs that Microsoft lovers love to think. -Jeff here, bloggy bloggy

<my rant> Their may be those (*some*) in open source and java community that think of Ximian (Mono) as traitors. Ximian is affiliating with the enemy. As Ximian is extending .NET reach into java territory. </my rant> Mike M WinInsider.com - News for Microsoftonians

Huh...if that is the case, why should Sun cut deal with MS, so now i'd say Sun is the traitor for java community. I'm sure in future there wont be much of java or .net territory as such, as Sun has accepted offers from MS a part of which includes lot of interop happening on server side between these two platforms.

It is not that Linux lacks applications (other than a legal DVD player ;) ), they do have a ton of applications out there. However, the user target is usally someone with a great deal of command prompt experience who does not mind spending hours or days installing, configuring and installing depended libraries. Windows software is by large targeted at a novice so that they can get the program installed and running fairly quickly. The primary point is that Linux is not built for novices, it was originally built for programmers and geek sys admins and the focus was a command prompt OS. The GUI is an addon so many applications and settings still require command prompt configurations. For programmers such as myself, that means the cost of developing for Linux is too great spending time learning all the ins and outs of the Linux OS and different GUIs and services. With Mono on Linux, it appears that you can build Linux applications (desktop and web) without having to learn Linux programming model and can use the knowledge we are already using to build Windows .NET applications. With that in mind, it will allow millions of more programmers which are tied to the MS Platform, access to the Linux platform. I think that is a win-win for both Linux and all of us Windows developers. Now if you can figure a way to make money from selling software on Linux you will have it made ;) Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com www.GotTheAnswerToSpam.com

Sun is already a traiter to open-source / linux zealots; but honestly, who cares about the opinions of those with one-track minds? Certainly not me. While I tend to stick with Microsoft products (talk about extensibility!) I realize that it isn't great for every job...which is why I run a modified linux kernel with iptables support for our firewall and anonymous FTP server. Linux and open source - as so many zealots want people to believe - will not cure the world of all its ills. Note, I'm not arguing with you, only stating that Sun is already considered a traitor (for other reasons as well, like not sucumming to open source completely) and that such one-track opinions should burden you. :)
