Accepting jobs without thinking good.

$36,000.-? USD? Per month? WOW, that's A LOT! Per year? Still more than my salary... :sigh::(( Maxwell Chen
Yea, unlike in Asia where they pay you the bottom dollar for the longest hour, in North America, companies actually pay and take care of their employees. You can actually do things like buy a decent house, a car, get married and have time to sleep. Can you believe that? Norman Fung

How long has this person been employed in her current position - if she just started, I don't think she should be able to renegotiate her salary. If she has been ther for some time and has shown productivity above what is expected by someone with the job requirements, perhaps she should be given an early performance review. At one of my jobs, I was given reviews every 6 months (with a corresponding raise). Another possibility is to see about a performance bonus instead of a raise - if her productivity is such that she finishes her projects ahead of schedule and meets or exceeds the requirements of the project may she can be given a bonus. In Taiwan, only employees at certain top companies (like MediaTek[^] (the best one), UMC, and TSMC, etc.,) get good pay. For example, the average pay per year at MediaTek is NT$25,000,000.- (US$735,300.-). And my salary is about NT$650,000.- per year (US$19,120.-). I have to work for 38 years to earn the amount of money that an employee at MediaTek earns in one single year! :(( X| Maxwell Chen

40 hr only. But in MediaTek, they don't work that many hours also. Maxwell Chen

"And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun"Of course NOT! Everyone knows it. There were reports on business news TV channels about this every years comparing which company offers the most including salary and stock bonus. And I do have a friend who was very poor before. He is now a billionaire, because he's been working at MediaTek for 5 years... Maxwell Chen

Man... how cheap do they want to pay their people? 150 years mortgage? How cheap does an employee has to get before they'd say, "Man, this guy's worth it! Welcome abroad!". Norman Fung
If I could, I'd move to some other country from Taiwan. Taiwan is not worth to live as a programmer! :sigh::mad: Maxwell Chen

Heard ya brother. Asia is about work: either pay your people cheap or get paid cheap. Hope at least you're doing what you like. It's all about "efficiency". "Well being" is not part of the optimization. Norman Fung

Only those who usually watch business TV news and read business newspapers about Taiwan IT industry know. But, anyway, welcome aboard! :-D Last month from TV news: * The top 1 company issueing 'cash bonus' for Year 2003 goes to ~ LiteON[^], average NT$9,500,000.- per employee. * The top 1 company issueing 'stock bonus' for Year 2003 goes to ~ MediaTek, average NT$15,000,000.-. (Continuously decreasing since amount of employees grows and revenue's not growing.) (Note: US$1.0 == NT$33.5 ) Maxwell Chen

AI is fun, but is there money in it...? BI (Business Intelligence) seems to be more profitable. Norman Fung
I am not sure if there's money from it, the most universally seen and been used are 'expert systems' and 'cognition / recognition'. Maxwell Chen
