I can't believe that even now there are people arguing about whether PHP is better than ASP. Frankly who cares...just use the one which u know better and which suits the project at hand better. How does one handle it when it comes from a co-worker? Regards, SRT

Agreed. Getting ASP to work on OSS is a pain (solutions exist, however), and both work pretty good on Windows (although Apache on Windows isn't as good as it is on *nix/BSD - at least not the older versions). srt7 wrote: How does one handle it when it comes from a co-worker? I think that PHP is a cool scripting language and has alot of benefits. I see it used alot on many sites, personal and commercial. Apache is also used quite a bit on the web too. Now you can all flame ur nonsense, but i see it like this. OSS is like a programmers hobby, alot of the guys do it for fun. IIS/ASP.NET are professional tools develope by the strongest software maker in the world (with almost unlimitied resources). Its an insult to MS that they even allow unorganized OSS projects compete with them. On top of that .NET has been in developement for so many years now, i expected this "java-killer" years ago. If .NET does destroy OSS/JAVA, its only cause MS learned from their mistakes. I know programmers hate to think this way... but solve the problem like a businessman. Assuming either platform would be able to fit the needs of the system in question, take into account *all* the costs: 1. The cost of the server/platform. For Apache/PHP, this will merely be the cost of the hardware. For IIS/.NET/whatever, it will also include the cost of the server + licenses. 2. Cost of development tools. 3. Cost of training developers. If you have a pack of .NET developers, it will cost money for training for them to start working in PHP. Likewise for the reverse. 4 Other less tangible factors need to be taken into account, such as maintainability, etc. If one platform is more maintenance-intensive, that needs to be factored into the cost. Same as developer productivity - some devs are perfectly happy using Notepad, and get their jobs done well. Others prefer a full IDE, a third-party editor, etc. At the end of it all, you get a number for each system you are considering. That number is probably going to be the biggest factor in your decision (at least, when you start talking to the management folks who will be budgeting for this stuff. :-D ) "Fish and guests stink in three days." - Benjamin Franlkin

First of all is that the way PHP started, now its more organized due to more people using it. Linux is alot better now due to more interest. That was my point, this time i will elaborate fully so that people do not need to pick on words. Microsoft is a huge company that probaly spends more omney on advertising thatn these guys do on developing. And that OSS is now more organized and has more funds and stuff, is only cause of MS frustrations. PHP is strogre now but that was not the site i looked 2-3 years when i start to play with php4 (for a project). Back then it was just a site with docs a forum and starting to go commercial. So now that it is more mature, it should be more people using it. I wouldnt expect them to drop developement, do blame me cause i cant keep up to every detail on every project. The point is that MS has more money, more resouces, more organiztion, and still OSS projects get stronger. Honeslty this site is getting to be a little too sensitvie with MS. I feel its becuse you know that their technology is starting to head downward (now thats an understatement). just to add in the wrong thing - I assigned two simple web scripting jobs (an Interactive Listening Test and a simple news manager) to him. The first one he did in PHP, because he knew. For the second, I made him learn ASP so he can integrate with existing stuff. Result: He wished he had done the first job in ASP.
