startVI isn't that bad, to enter the commands ESC-wq (write, quit) ESC-q! to exit without saving etc. NANO is easy to use in the command line, it shows everything. -Steven Hicks

emacs is a pain to install (as the default for various applications) and get used to. But you'll love it once you get used to it. "To his dog, every man is Napoleon"

startI agree with you totally. I like using Windows since I actually like to get some work done instead of spending all my time fiddling with my PC searching for drivers ;p But if you are stuck using Linux and need an editor I think there are few sophisticated alternatives to emacs "To his dog, every man is Napoleon"

startI use gedit on Linux - very nice. Don't know if its available on Solaris.

It's extensible enough to host pretty much anything you need inside it. And then some more. Heck, if it was possible, some people would rather boot emacs than an OS. Those who argue that emacs sucks doesn't know and/or appreciate Lisp. It requires a month or so to become friend with emacs, but when you have, it'll be your best friend ever. After having been locked up in the Windows world for three years, I really do miss emacs. :sigh: -- Booohoo! -
