.....Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years time? I hate that question! And I always find myself getting caught offguard when they ask that question, even though I know they will ask that. It's just that I can't seem to get the right answer for it. I mean, I know where I want to be in 3-5 years time, doing what I like best, coding. But I always get the feeling that it's not going to be a good enough answer so I choke up.:sigh: So, what's the interview questions you hate the most?

The question I hate the most is, 'why do you want to work for us?'. Isn't it obvious, idiot? I need a job :) Might just as well ask me why I want to breath. Rob Manderson I'm working on a version for Visual Lisp++

I'm beginning to suspect these questions are asked to give us a chance to kiss there a$$. Q: Why do you want to work for us? A: That's because you're company is the leading pioneer in so and so technology, and for the chance to work under so and so great manager and may I polish your shoes now? X|

Heh! Actually I don't credit them with that much intelligence. They probably think a job interview needs to take X amount of time and has to look 'professional'. The most 'professional' interview I ever had was way way back when I used to fix radios for a living. I fronted up asking for a job. A few nondescript questions and then up came the question of my technical proficiency. Could I actually do what I claimed I could do? They showed me a pile of dead car radios and said 'fix one'. So I hooked it up, did the usual wet finger probes (diagnostic tests for the uninitiated :) ) and had it completed in about 15 minutes. Hired on the spot! Ok, I know that's a gross oversimplification of the nature of a job interview. For one who fixes car radios there's hardly a question of 'does he have the ability to work in a team'. Likewise, there's hardly a question of 'can he adapt to new technology' in the same way that we have to. But on the other hand, 'where do you want to be in 5 years' isn't exactly cutting edge interviewing either. I usually answer 'above the surface' and leave em to work out what I mean :) Rob Manderson I'm working on a version for Visual Lisp++

So say something that could also be perceived as a strength. Something like you don't trust other developers, or you prefer to derive your own solutions to problems rather than blindly taking somebody's results, or you find it a bit difficult to understand a lot of the fancier language constructs so your code is usually pretty simple (read: 'easy to debug and maintain' - managers care more about that than fancy constructs). There's plenty of things you can say :) No, I'm not saying these are brilliant examples - they just came to me at the time ;) Remember, what you perceive as a weakness may not necessarily be perceived as a weakness by other people, and above all, be truthful because honesty can get you a long way in the selection process.

The one that I hate the most is, "Tell me, what are your weaknesses?" Saying "I have no weaknesses!" is very egotistical, but shows confidence. I guess the merit of that answer depends on who is interviewing you. You also don't want to be too modest and reel off a laundry list of faults, thus talking yourself out of a job. After all these years, I still don't have an answer that I am comfortable with. The question caught me by surprise once and my reply was, "I work too hard sometimes". :~ Gary Kirkham A working Program is one that has only unobserved bugs He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. - Jim Elliot Who you are in Christ

My answers.... Giving you your pink slip ( layoff ). Winning the lottery and telling you to shove it. With your wife under my desk. Question that I don't like is do you work well alone or in a group? Seems that you have to phrase your answer very carefully to make sure you cover that you do both well. Silence is golden, so shut the heck up!
