I've just been to a Microsoft MSDN event today and there was a session on ASP.NET 2.0. :omg: GIVE IT TO ME NOW!

All the new funky controls. The Master Page allows you to create a layout that all pages can use, then you can just reference the master page from a Content page. Hey presto - Everything has the same look and feel. There's a Tree View control (it looks like the tree view on the MSDN web site), a Menu control, various login / user management controls and some new Data Aware controls. Security has been improved, including cookieless forms authentication. My head is buzzing because they guy went rather quickly (it was only a one hour session to get through everything)

Not to mention personalization features, which I'm really looking forward to (having worked a lot with SharePoint and sufferred through it's documentation...or lack thereof). I especially like full use of the provider pattern. I've been doing it in my application designs when time allows, but it's nice to see it push it's way to the front of the crowd as the premier abstraction layer for data and communications.

Yeah, I saw a little about it at the DevDays conference. Do they have a date when it is supposed to be available? Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com www.GotTheAnswerToSpam.com

SharePoint Services 2.0 (SPS as you'll commonly see it) is a free download from microsoft.com (don't remember where - just search). It wasn't ready by the time Win2K3 shipped which is why it's not included. In the same section (or near) as the download, you'll find some links to the SDK - which consists only of an HTML Help 1.x (.chm) file. If you want to develop WebParts on a development machine instead of the server (like who'd do that?!) you actually have to copy Microsoft.SharePoint.dll (and optionally its corresponding .xml file) from the server's C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\frontpage extensions\6.0\bin (or something like that). There are lots of sites about SharePoint, but they are typically simple HOWTOs (that most people would know if they actually read the documentation) and known issues. They're more of a knowledge base than anything. One such site is http://wss.collutions.com/default.aspx[^]. Good luck - you'll need it!

2.0 is set to RTM in the first half of 2005. "Community Tech Previews" are being handed out at all the conferences, and is available for MSDN subscribers to download. Marcie CP Blog[^]
