I am a hobbyist programmer, but now i am preparing to take a few certs so that i can go into developement. I am a real back-end type guy, not into making cool GUI's or pages, but rather making sure everything works right inside. I live in NYC and i figured since the trend of developement here is primarily business, i would take the MSCD for asp and C#. On top of that i figured i would also certify myself in oracle, later in MySQL. But before i start, i was hoping for some opinions and guidance in the right direction. I usually post alot and i figure that this should be a good lounge question, not asking for anybody to go out of their way, just throw in thier two cents. I got about a grand to spend on certification, just want the biggest bang for my buck. I have taken time to have a real overall knowledge developing, i try to work on anything once (cept VB sry) so please throw any test that might be helpful (also started working on linux, by dual booting wiht slackware. in my (limited) experience a lot of dev work in nyc uses open source stuff (linux, php, perl, mysql, etc) so it might be a good idea to be familiar with them too maybe i guess it all depends on what type of dev work u wanted to aim for ... ie what industry?

Well i am pretty familiar already with the linux triad (php/apache/mysql). The only thing is that certification for OSS is not the best, so i figured with the oracle and mscd i could convince people that i can work both. Truth be toold linux is hands down better for business (sry i keep windows only for games and easability). The way i see it NYC developement needs lie mostly for businees/db work. MySQL is basically knowing SQL, and learning MySQL quirks (ever tried embedding it into a windows app :(( lol). I'll have to look into those certs too thanks for your advice. thanks i would really appreciate it. If i do decide to go that route atleast i know whats worth taking and whats not, since OSS has become more viable, the certs have been popping out the wood works. On top of that not many for programming or developing (unleess more have been added, but then the are probably seperated by flavor or Xwindow systems (QT, Gnome). This is a reply to myself to hopefully that i amtrying to solve my own quandry lol. I think if i take the MSCD i will take these test: Exam 70–315: Developing and Implementing Web Applications with Microsoft Visual C#™ .NET and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Exam 70–316: Developing and Implementing Windows-based Applications with Microsoft Visual C# .NET and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Exam 70–320: Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Microsoft Visual C# and the Microsoft .NET Framework Exam 70–300: Analyzing Requirements and Defining Microsoft .NET Solution Architectures (this ones a given) Exam 70–229: Designing and Implementing Databases with Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 Enterprise Edition Then i thought i would go with Oracle certification: Exam #1Z0-007 Introduction to Oracle9i: SQL Exam #1Z0-147 Oracle9i: Program with PL/SQL (if i can afford it i'd like to take three other courses to become a certified developer) I know when people ask these questions, one thing they get in response is "what do you like?want to do". I live in the South bRonx and i have been working and studying for the past few years because programming is my calling. My programmng style and beleif is "anything possible, all you need is lots of time or lots of money (resources). Right now i am working on a cross platform OSS (probably BSD) POS business management system. I want to learn C# from a develpoers standpoint and i figured this project is a very positive way to do it. Also figure if i can't find work i could use the system to start business for myself. I like to work on the most complicated things lol (things that make others cringe gives me an insane grin ). My interest are game developement, creating and playing with databases (mostly MySQL), ATL/WTL (OSS woohoo! (WTL)), and something i dubbed User interaction recognition. As for languages, i tend to stick to Object Oreintated languages (C#, C++, little java). I am a intellect stuck in the dumb part of town lol, these certs i hope will break me out and into some real fun stuff. Honestly i have at most a $1000 to take enough test to show i know what i am talking about. One of my biggest faults is the fact that i am usually so swamp trying to make the day to day work, my programming suffers. I just want the biggest bang for my buck and hope you guys can help. Another thing is that i know i dont sound like what i am saying, as i think i am a little to out of the box  . Discovery consist of seeing w

taking what you said into consideration what if i were to take the sun certified developer, MSCD.NET (C#, and mssql related), and the MySQL certification. Thoughts?
