Today is my last day in my current job. I'm leaving the corporate development world to go back to the small software company world. I start my new job Monday, which is also my birthday. So that's my birthday present this year.

Here's hoping that on your first day at the office, you are greeted with a birthday cake. Good luck to you. :) Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] I think people should be required to have an operator's permit to use the internet. John Simmons

Funny, I'm leaving my job this Friday (a day before my birthday) in a small software company (I've worked for two startups in the last 4 or 5 years) and moving to a big company (Microsoft). Congrats on your move and an early happy birthday!

I always liked working for smaller companies. Better to be a big fish in a small pond that a small fish in a big one ;) Seriously, there are down sides depending on the profitabilty of the smaller company and sometimes the benefits and chance for advancement as not as good, but it is great to work in a place where your work makes a huge difference and you can really feel like you are part of something. Good luck! Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com www.MyQuickPoll.com www.GotTheAnswerToSpam.com

Our development team is pretty small, even at the big corp. And profitability is a plus side at the small place I am going. I'm in the healthcare field right now and the new Medicare reimbursement rates that kick in next year are going to seriously impact companies like the one I am leaving. Jeff Martin Triple20 Software

Thanks! In the offer letter, it said I get my birthday off each year. I considered telling them that I wanted it off this year :D . I get it as a floating day, so maybe I'll take it later. [edited to fix the smiley] Jeff Martin Triple20 Software

Thanks! I'll be a Software Design Engineer in the Developer Division Sustained Engineering team, which works with the .NET, Visual Studio, and Windows Scripting teams. It'll definitely be an exciting opportunity, one I've wanted since I was very young. My wife and I will move to the Seattle area. Not sure exactly where, yet, but we have some time to look around and decide.

Probably not as many, but I'm hoping that CodeProject can serve as my "community service", which every engineer there is required to do (just usually in the newsgroups). I also plan on doing a lot of backpacking. :)

I'll get right on that. :) It does look nice. It'll be nice having geeks to talk to that understand me, unlike my current job (though Tom Larsen does). I won't carry as much weight in the company as I (am supposed to) do now, but it'll be nice working for a company that might not vanish next week!

I agree with you in ways, but I've worked for two companies where I could (and did) make a very big impact, but I was always fearful for the stability of the company. Proplanner (my current employer...until tomorrow) is starting to stablize after 2+ years, but it's just not a good working condition wondering if you (or anyone) will have a job tomorrow (because the company might fold). It's caused a lot of stress. That, and Iowa is incredibly boring.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks! :) We actually kind of like Issaquah, though we haven't had a good change to look around. It's not too far from Redmond and Bellevue (where my wife would most likely work for the time being) and I won't have long commutes on the interstate (just a little on 90 then take 148th St. north a few miles). We're still a ways off on buying a house or townhome, though.

We've actually found a few nice places under $250K in areas around Redmond. I'm prepared to see such prices, but not quite prepared to pay them! :)

Unfortunately for me, I know exactly what you're talking about. EXACTLY. "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

If you like to waste your money at bars all night. X| Thanks, and good luck with ISU! Just remember they won't teach you nearly enough (and the only thing current is Java), so spend a lot of time outside learning on your own. Believe me, it's fun to teach the profs as several of us did (just don't go too far and schmooze as much as possible, but don't get a brown nose if you know what I mean). I got to know a lot of the professors and it worked out well (the one professor that would never allow late homework did for me once and even let me finish the final after my alarm went off late - my fault - that day).

You surely will have no problems of stability with your new job other than offshoring. Unfortunately for me, I know exactly what you're talking about. EXACTLY. "One of the Georges," said Psmith, "I forget which, once said that a certain number of hours' sleep a day--I cannot recall for the moment how many--made a man something, which for the time being has slipped my memory."

When I ended up in the emergency room with heart-attack-like symptoms (my family has a bad history with them), I knew it was time to start looking. 70-80 hour weeks EVERY week and trying to balance a family (currently a wife; fortunately no kids) just wasn't working anymore after 2 years with hardly any vacation.

You sound like you are in some flat land somewhere ;) The Pacific Northwest (or even the western States) have a lot of outdoor activites. Lots of nature out here. In Seattle though, be prepared for rain :) Beautiful country out here! Rocky <>< www.HintsAndTips.com www.MyQuickPoll.com - 2004 Election poll is #33 www.GotTheAnswerToSpam.com

It's a little place known as Iowa. We just got a brand-spanking new mall with a Pottery Barn and everything! Yeeha! Seriously, if I hear about that stupid mall that makes us look like bigger hicks than we already do again (it's on every friggin' radio station and people are flocking to it like Catholics to the Pope), I'm going to go insane! I used to do a lot of backpacking with the Boy Scouts (I'm an Eagle Scout) and Explorers (like the Boy Scouts but older and with chicks...er, young women), but it's been many years since I had that chance. I'm definitly looking forward to it. When I was interviewing at Microsoft, I took my wife to Mt. Rainier (only an hour away...except we got stuck in rush hour traffic - but it was "good" to experience) and that was her first time in the mountains. She loved it (good thing). I also want to eventually pick up some rappeling gear and pick that back up.
