Coffee question

If water spins down the drain one way in the northern hemisphere and the other way in the southern hemisphere, does that mean if you stir your coffee the same way in each it will in fact stir faster?

i guess you have to add a draining system to your coffee mugg for that to be true? or? maybe some sort of 2 stage rocket like mug..
+---+
| | <- top stir part
| |
+- -+ <- small hole
| |
| | <-bottom part
+---+you pour the coffee in the top part and stir .. since that part has a hole in it , it will stir faster (or not at all if you go the wrong direction) when there is no coffee left in the top part , you remove it and drink the coffee //Roger

Nope, it's the Coriolis Effect. Ask Chris, he saw it with his own two eyes when he moved to Canada. Chris is quite the stickler for scientific fact so if he saw it, I believe it ;) regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Ian Darling wrote: "and our loonies usually end up doing things like Monty Python." Suzanne Boyle wrote: Is that not a myth? No, it's for real. I noticed it myself while I was in Oz. It's really unnerving at first, because something looks wrong when the water drains and you can't quite put your finger on it, and then you twig :-)

An episode of The Simpsons[^] addresses this question. Bart: "Do the toilets go backwards in here?" U.S Embasy guy: "No. To combat home sickness, we've installed a device that makes them swirl the correct American way." *Flushes toilet. Machine kicks in and water swirls the other way* Homer (weeping, singing): "Sweet land of liberty..." Steve
