Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :mad: :mad: Installed SP2 on my work machine yesterday. Perfect. No issues. Very impressed. Installed SP2 on an older machine at home last night. Perfect. No issues. Very Impressed. I though I'd just take the dive and install it on my laptop (where I do most of my non-work work.. if you know what I mean).... :eek: The damned laptop won't load windows now. :mad: START: Starts, after the BIOS post etc, I see the lovely loading Windows XP screen with the shiny blue progress bar bouncing from side to side to show me that something is actually happening... then the screen goes black, just like it would before the lovely blue logon screen is displayed... and nothing.. machine reboots... now... GOTO START; (i.e. it loops continuously doing the above) Ah... I'm moving to linux, or a mac.. or something that doesn't screw up when you install an update. BTW. OK, had the same problem, but on my desktop at home, start windows into Safe Mode, shutdown and restart. Seems to fix the problem. :confused: It was moaning about finding some boot file?

Once the update was done the machine would not boot in any configuration (safe mode failed, last known good failed). In all cases it hung on agp.sys. I ended up reinstalling XP original over the the top, reapplying SP1a and about a million updates, then reinstalling VS6 and VS.NET etc... it took about 7 hours in total. So now the question is - do I dare try it on this machine at home? That damn 8 ball isn't saying :-) On the other hand - there's the kids machine - they don't use it so I just might take the plunge to upgrade from Win2k to XP and thence to SP2... I was reluctant to put it on my laptop as it's where I do most of my personal work... but it went perfect for me on two machines, no problems, and I hadn't heard any horros stories... so I though I'd go for it. I haven't succeded in installing it on anything yet (despite trying several versions on several machines) so updates are definitely not a problem. ;P

There is only one proper way to install a service pack 1) backup all data 2) slipstream the service pack into a bootable disc 3) blow away current os and do a full re-install 4) look on in wonder as the os works :) I have great misgivings about installing service packs (that replace 90% of the os system files) on a system that has who knows what software installed on - it's just not worth the risk

Most of the time taken though was waiting for the dvd to burn at 2x :(

Windows doesn't seem to cope properly with that. I fixed it by reenabling ACPI. You may be able to fix it by booting from the CD and selecting Repair. Stability. I know the feeling about time taken - I've just spent 2 days making a bootable XP sP2 dvd with all the drivers, utilities and apps used on my network - only just have it working now. Most of the time taken though was waiting for the dvd to burn at 2x :(

The first time it happened the instant I put a CD in the drive, the second time when it was just about done reading files off of it. I'm not sure if XP2 is to blame, but it's hard to rule out since I haven't had a single blue screen on this machine so far--but OTOH I've only had the machine itself for less than a month. The timing is still suspicious though.

I've seen those symptoms before - I last saw that when I had an ACPI HAL installed and set the BIOS to no-ACPI mode. Windows doesn't seem to cope properly with that. I fixed it by reenabling ACPI.
