XP SP 2 suggestion

Hey, Should i install XP SP2?:~ What kinds of problems can I expect, cos I am running XP against the "wishes" of my manager, and am sure he'd jump at any reason to have me go back to :~ 2000 professional :((! So should I just avoid it until MS releases SP3? "If you build it.... .....BUGS will come!" -JB

:-D ... I am working for a company where most users are running win 95 No way am I going to fall for that, btw my manager knows that I am running XP but doesn't like it. "If you build it.... .....BUGS will come!" -JB

Still haven't installed it on my main machine or on my laptop (thanks for the tip Navin). But that's only because I haven't had the time to think what would happen and I don't need any more problems now. What an interesting concept" - Chris MaunderI put it on a couple of machines here, and had the unfortunate luck on my main developer box to have the thing blow away the operating system unrecoverably. I tried several things, but an old friend at Microsoft was kind enough to run my problem through to "people that care about this sort of thing" and the recommendation that came back was to upgrade my BIOS. I was floored. So this past weekend, I did a massive backup, updated the BIOS, installed SP2 ... went through without a hitch. I've been just peachy since Saturday. I've heard mixed results. It seems to be particularly problematic on laptops.. in fact someone I know installed it, it broke some wireless network stuff, and it wouldn't uninstall, and he had to do a complete re-install. :wtf: So I may do a complete backup before even thinking about trying it on my laptop. :-O An expert is somebody who learns more and more about less and less, until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.
I haven't seen any problems with the built-in wireless on my Dell laptop; I usually use the built-in wired LAN though. I did a full backup before installing SP2, just in case :D James

So far, I've put it on a few machines at work (plus my home box), and not had any problems apart from the native Bluetooth support that Microsoft added to SP2 being pretty poor (which is annoying, because I use Bluetooth frequently at home, and now it doesn't work as well). There are apparently some things to look out for with VS.NET, but I think they're to do with remote debugging, so you may be ok. If you're really unsure, take an image of your harddisk using Partition Magic or Norton Ghost or something, so you can roll back even if the whole thing goes boom. HTH

I just installed it on my work laptop with no intallation problems - first time it started, the Security Center complained about not being abot to determine if Norton AV was up to date (I had disabled it for the upgrade), but a reboot took care of that. Now, if only they would distribute the updates for IE and OE so the older machines can take advantage of the new security features (like popup blocking in IE, external image blocking in OE)... Steve

I say yes. But I've had no problems with SP2 and neither has anyone I work with. The only issue might be the firewall, but it's very easy to work with. (I haven't figured out how to turn it off without being nagged, but I leave it on on all my systems.) (I like the new security features of IE and have left most of them on. You can do this for virus scan and automatic updates (though the text will obviously be differnt :rolleyes: ) Matt Newman

Oh...well, in that case...I'd be a rebel too. :-) Though I'm curious--if you have machines that are capable of handling XP, why are they running 95? Or are you one of the few at that company with a decent machine?
