Well, Now She's Done It

The most ambitious gift I've ever received - a 1/60th scale wood sailing ship model. Wow! The H.M.S. Bounty in all her 810mm splendor (how big is that in useful measurements - inches?), and I have to lay the keel, cut and position the frames, and then lay each plank individually (including the hull). I have to taper the masts and yard-arms, and rig the blocks, tackle, copper sheet the hull, and all kinds of other such stuff. Anyone else do this as a hobby? I also received the 15-dvd set of Monte Python's Flying Circus. "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!" HAHAHA... I do. But not at the moment due to RL. Sounds like you have a bulkhead kit. This is usually an intermediate kit. http://www.seaways.com/ http://home.att.net/~ShipModelFAQ/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ModelBoats/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ShipModelers-Forum/ http://www.modelexpo-online.com/ - these are the Model Shipways people. http://www.artesania.it/ http://www.billingboats.com/ http://www.midwestproducts.com/ http://www.nationalbalsa.com/ Who made the kit? Artesania Latina is good stuff. I have a Model Shipways kit. One of the first things I would do is inventory all the parts. ESPECIALLY if it is a Model Shipways kit. They will gladly send you all missing parts. But they are bad about shipping kits with missing pieces. Also, the laser cutting stuff is great... WHEN they actually program the laser right. Don't trust that they did the layouts proper. Check and recheck alignment. Let me say that again. If there is one thing to be anal about while building these things is "CHECK AND RECHECK ALIGNMENT". Above all, that has caused me more frustration. Not checking alignment fully and then later noticing that the deck has a bulge where a bulkhead wasn't properly cut. Have fun. :) I have to say that it can be very fustrating and VERY rewarding. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

The H.M.S. Bounty in all her 810mm splendor (how big is that in useful measurements - inches?), Merry Christmas John, 25.4mm to the inch. I constructed R/C model aircraft from balsa wood when I was a kid, but never could afford a remote control unit and so they never flew! I loved the construction of the airframe, pushrods, landing gear etc but not so much the finishing details. Like with software the last 5% becomes just as much effort as the first 95% and starts to become more of a chore. I'm reading the Python tutorial at the moment, did you know the guy named the language after the 'Flying Circus': From the Python doco: By the way, the language is named after the BBC show ``Monty Python's Flying Circus'' and has nothing to do with nasty reptiles. Making references to Monty Python skits in documentation is not only allowed, it is encouraged! sonork ID: 100.9940

810 mm is 81 cm. 1 in == 2.54 cm, so divide 81 by 2.54 to get... 31.88976377952755905511811023622 inches --Mike-- My really out-of-date homepage "Why does anyone have a web page? It's a Mantua kit. The instructions suck, and I have no earthly clue how the ship was painted. I already know I'm going to copper the hull. :) "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

Heh... Scupper doesn't mean to copper a hull. But it is a nautical construction term. http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=scupper Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.
