I have a brother that is graduating in December… He is currently doing the whole job search thing with not much luck. So my question to everyone is, where/how did you find your job??? It has been so long since I have been down this road, I have no clue where to start as far as helping him out… giving him leads. Cheers! ------ I am the sole owner of all comments/statements made by myself, and they do not represent those of my company in any way. Furthermore, it’s a shame it has come to the point where we have to make statements like this. Cheers! ====================== Matthew R. Miller www.computersmarts.net[^]

While in my final year of uni, (nearing the end) I found an ad at uni for a gaming (big gambling not computer games) company who were looking for graduate programmers. I applied, and after about 3 months I got the job. 3.5 years later I decided it was time to move on and started looking. After a strenuous 2 week period of interviews, I got 3 offers on the one day. Basically I got one offer and told another company and so they offered something and told the third and they decided to offer me a position too. Just as I was making my mind up I got a call from a company that got my name from my university alumni website. I had no idea my name was there and my phone number. a Dev Manager was looking for an experience C/C++ programmer and I fit the bill. Went in for 2 interviews and got the job. I ended up taking that. The others I applied through a job website called www.seek.com.au, but thats in australia. From there I saw a few recruitment agencies and they passed me on to dev companies. 3.5 years later again, and I was itchin to move on as I hit my 3.5year limit :). Just as I was looking, I was made redundant (6 months after getting a most valuable programmer award at this company). I got paid *big smile* and i applied for jobs again through the website. Once again a recruitment agency got me an interview at the current company (IT Security) I'm in, and I've been here for approx 6 months and everything is going great. So much to learn... but its great. I have had one friend try to help me get a position at his work, but it wasn't something that I think I would be interested in doing, although it was still nice of him to help. What I recommend is apply, apply, apply. There are jobs out there, and I think you should go to interviews and not just be interviewd, but also interview them. Dont' get stuck in a job you aren't going to like. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that life is one crushing defeat after another until you just wish Flanders was dead. - Homer Simpson

I found my last job by emailing my CV to 24 recruitment agencies in 1998. Three of them turned out to be worth bothering with. I did land on my feet though. That move (from Racal to Sonardyne) raised my salary from £24k + overtime to £35k + bonus. I learnt a lesson from that - not to undervalue myself. For most of my career, I've lucked into most of my jobs. A case of who you know rather than what you know. My first especially. My family lived near a guy who ran a small software development house and he took me on as a trainee because I was into programming. I done a lot of BASIC and a little bit of PASCAL. I was 16 and cheap. So I started to learn to become a C programmer. This job only lasted for a year before we parted ways as I didn't fit in. Too young, too naive. My second job, I got via a friend of a friend at college. My college mate had told me about this software development shop and when I lost my first job, I rang them - got an interview and got the job. Again, pure luck. They weren't really hiring but I had one year C programming knowledge which was more than their staff of BBC Basic programmers had so they took a chance. I did eventually go back to my first company after being made redundant. The guy knew I didn't have a job and rang me up and offered me another role there. Which I took, because there weren't many local programming jobs. The guy took another chance on me and this time it all came together nicely. I spent five years there until I moved on. I owe the guy a lot, sadly he died a few years ago but without him giving me start in C programming my life would have been very different. (I might have stayed programming PASCAL ;-) ) Michael CP Blog [^]

I don't like using agencies now that I am the employer but the two jobs I have found came through agencies. One was a specialised IT agency and the other was just a general jobs agency. My third job has come through being active in an online community. Straight out of school or with very little experience I'd say try an agency or hope you know someone that knows someone. And check the paper a lot, that is how we advertise for new positions. After some experience you can start working the network which is the best way really. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Michael Dunn wrote: "except the sod who voted this a 1, NO SOUP FOR YOU" Crikey! ain't life grand?

My first job I found advertised in our towns local paper (it was actually my mother that noticed it). The job I'm currently in now, which, incidently I've been in for exactly 2 years today, I got because one of the guys working here worked at my last company. One thing I would say about getting a job because you know someone, make sure if your out of work they didn't know your previous salary. I started here on 4k less than the 2 others who started at the same time (both of whom have subsequently left) SuzyB If I had a better memory I would remember more.

I've been at Timex now for over 8 years. I was working for an OCR company before this right out of college (I actually did an internship with them, and it led to a full-time position after school). I was really unhappy there and my wife (girlfriend at the time) said that I should start looking for a job. Luickily enough, a recruiter just happened to get my name from a co-worker. He gave me a call and I talked to him for a while. He sent me on two interviews, and then Timex was the third. They hired me on the spot. The economy is not as good as it was in '96, so it probably will take a longer time to get hired, but the recruiter will do all the looking for you. I *just* graduated Uni last month, and was VERY lucky that I found a job so quickly. I tried doing the "check company websites for available jobs" route, but I only got a few interviews that way, and no offers (no one wnats to hire a new-grad; they want people with 3-5 years experience... which begs the question: how do i get 3-5 years if no one will hire me!). But at least i got the interviews: most of my friends are still looking. Anyways, I went to the co-op advisor at our Uni (hopefully your brother's university has something like that) and asked her if she knew any companies that were hiring, and got my interview and offer that way. I was lucky to graduate when this company was going through a hiring phase though. So, it's more about who you know, rather than what you know (for the most part). :sigh: The kindest thing you can do for a stupid person, and for the gene pool, is to let him expire of his own dumb choices. I have 24 months (6x4month co-op terms) of experience, and 20 or that was in software development (I figured I'd try this whole "hardware" concept: it was not for me). Anyways.. most companies i've talked to see that I'm a new grad, and view co-op experience as "monkey work" where the student doesnt do anything. So they dont consider it part of the 3-5 years thing. Which kind of defeats some of the purpose of being in co-op to begin with! Oh well.. i have a job now, and my Visa bill is MUCH less. :-D The kindest thing you can do for a stupid person, and for the gene pool, is to let him expire of his own dumb choices.
