Fair dinkum. I got the VS2005 CD's yesterday, but I want to install it on my home PC, not the notebook I use for work ( scared it will break my production environment ). I run W2000 at home ( because it works, and because I paid for it ). To install, I need a service pack, and IE6SP1. So I come to work, download the service pack. Now go to download IE. Nope, sorry. I can download an online INSTALLER for IE, but not IE. If IE was just a browser, that would make sense. Who needs a browser if they are not online. Well, it would make sense if every person on the earth had broadband. But IE is needed for all sorts of other things like, well, Visual Studio. Apparently, I can contact support and ask for a network install of IE6, but if there's one to just download, I sure can't find it. So there goes my chance to look at VS, unless I lug my PC to work, get it connected to the network, and install IE6. Or if it comes on a coverdisc or something... Christian I have several lifelong friends that are New Yorkers but I have always gravitated toward the weirdo's. - Richard Stringer

You don't have MSDN, do you? If so you probably have a CD labelled "Internet Exporer Versions" or something like that, that has full installs of the various IE flavors. However, I don't know if you can download this other than MSDN subscriber downloads. Yeah, you have to pay for a free component... There might be some other "mirror" sites that have the full version up for grabs though, it's worth looking around. But I know it exists. An expert is somebody who learns more and more about less and less, until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.

Just like when I installed XPSP2 on my labtop and all of a sudden I had firewalls and all kind of crap turned on that I dont need or want! So frustrating!! :mad:

I understand that but why cant they allow you to use any web browser you feel. No need to force the use of there products. ahhhhhh! Dont get me wrong I like alot of there products but no need to be pushy! :mad:

The HTML/XML editors in Visual Studio, among other things, use components from IE6. Interestingly enough, Microsoft may not be legally able to distribute those components on the Visual Studio CD, due to the various judgements brought by the commie bastards Justice Dept.

I also was annoyed about the unceasing stream of messages that kept appearing. It seems like Micro$oft can't, or more accurately won't, recognize other firewalls that are installed on the system. I am talking about a professional firewall purchased from a reputable anti virus company and not some open source, in Micro$ofts opinion, interloper. This firewall complies to current firewall standards and monitors outbound traffic which is essential regardless of Micro$ofts marketing hype about their inferior firewall solution. I disabled the three options in the Security Control Center, As I mentioned before I have installed a perfectly good anti virus/firewall solution, albeit not Micro$oft's, and it still kept telling me that I was at danger because I wasn't monitoring for updates. I felt like changing the message to be that I was at danger because I was using Micro$oft products and by doing so I needed to be aware of and install the patch of the day. Then it would at least be an accurate message and not just some marketing hype designed to distract you from the fact that the software they sold to you was not up to professional standards. Eventually, I went in and disabled the Security Center Service, since I wasn't using any of it's features, and all is now quiet on the Western Front. There is a good reason to re-install SP2. It has been a very long time since the previous WinXP Service Pack was released and there are a gazillion patches since then, some of them critical, that would need to be installed if your system is to be less vulnerable.

Likewise, I had to allow some ports to run some services when I first installed it, but havent had a single prompt since. But I love the new secure IE, it's almost as good as firefox now... almost. ;P [worldspawn]
