I have an interesting conundrum. I have always been very skinny and high intellegent, especially in regards to computers and software architecture. A long time ago I was on this fitness kick and began bulkinh up and gaining a substantial amount of lean body mass. While doing this I seemed less and less interested in computers and wasn't able to focus on development. That time has long sense passed and I find myself in the same position again. I have joined the gym and have started working out to gain weight again ( I really hate people telling me I need to eat more because I'm too skinny, that's another topic about my pysche.) Now that I am gaining weight and really into working out I find myself slowly losing the ability to concentrate on software developement. I used to be able to develop a neural network in my sleep and knew how a finite automata machine worked. I wonder if there are any body builders out there that are still able to concentrate on being a phenomenal software developer. I feel as though the more I workout and the bigger I get the stupider I become. I suppose this could have to do with what my brain is focusing on all the time, but I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the matter. Like I said, very interesting stuff. :) - Drew

For me it's just the opposite. If I don't excercise I start to feel like crap and become really slugish. Try cross training. Lift weights one day, swim the next, and practice a martial art the third.

I am a bit antiskinny and I typically focus better when I did some workout. However, this seems to be because I sleep more effectively. (working out at the Gym, however, I consider a poor excuse for masochists in denial)

I personally find that 1 or 2 hours a day where I can just blow some steam and throw some weights around actually helps me focus more. Like already mentioned, diet is especially important when working out, if you don't eat right you won't feel right. I'm no super man and workout just so I don't ache when I wake up in the morning from sitting at a computer for 13-17 hours the day before. Excersize for me is crucial...I feel like i'm 50 rather then 25 if I don't. Besides women love a hard body...even if it's just toned and not incredibly muscular. Just make sure you hide those ribs if their showing. Cheers :) How do I print my voice mail?

if you're not feeding yourself properly, your body will not recuperate properly, and will not respond well to intellectual activities ( your energy will be used for refuelling the muscles instead of the brain ( me think ) ). eat well, before and after a good gym session; drink a lot and rest ( if possible ).

You are completely correct in your assumption. Your body is using up many nutrients that would otherwise be used by your brain. Ones eating habits must change to compensate for this change in lifestyle. (For details talk to someone else … it has been way too many years since I last looked into this in detail!) If you do so, you will find yourself way more energetic. There are also other factors in play as well, such as focus. If all you did was 'code' before and now you do two main 'intense' activities. Your thoughts will be less focused, since they will be split across the two. If you find yourself thinking about working out instead of optimizing a routine, then focus is your issue. This is quite common and has less to do with what type of activities you do, but how ‘intense’ these activities are (Just ask some game addicts what they dream/think about!!) As a 'retired' weightlifting competitor, I understand this way too well. Troy

You're probably not getting enough rest, or not eating enough/properly. Any serious bodybuilder needs plenty of protein and carbs (good carbs, not candy bars!). Since you're the skinny type, you probably don't need to worry about getting fat, so eat plenty of good carbs and protein. In order to gain mass, I recommend a Zone type diet (40% carbs, 30% proteins, 30% good fat). Don't forget the shake after each training. You can probably take those weight gainer shakes (very high carbs) since you're the skinny type once again. Now, stop whining and go pump some iron! ;P

Yeah I don't really think it's the diet or the sleep. I sleep a good 8-10 hours a day I eat a good 3000 - 3500 calories a day. 250 grams of protien and 450+ grams of carbs with a little bit of fat. I am no longer skinny which is why I started having my problem. I get so focused on my body and working out that I feel that I lose focus on the computer. BTW for anyone that posted their stats, here's mine: 5'8" 145 lbs ~8% body fat. 270lb bench 140lb curl Also for anyone serious about working out I would not recommend eating 30% fat unless you want to get fat, although I'm not sure what you are referring to when you mention the fat percentage. I assume you mean the percentage of fat per calories each day. - Drew

You sure do pump a lot of weight for your weight and height! btw, fat doesn't make someone fat, carb does. Of course, fat needs to be consumed with moderation since it's 9 calories per gram! And yes, 30% is based on the calorie count.

Thanks! I wish I could say it's because I am so dedicated but I have good genetics and almost no body fat so the 145 lbs of weight is almost all muscle. I'm not really boasting because it is hard for me to gain weight due to Chrone's disease and I hate it. This also makes it hard for me to put on fat because my intestines that process fat is missing (Yes I know putting on fat and processing fat are seperate, however, it certainly helps when your body can't process it). Hope that wasn't TMI for some. ;) And yes, 30% is based on the calorie count. Yikes, that would be 111 grams of fat for me. :) So in my case I don't think percentage is the best model to use for determing how much fat to include in a diet. - Drew

You weigh 145 lbs and you press 270lbs in the bench!? Uh, you should be competing in the olympics or something. -- Wir müssen leben bis wir sterben.

Well to people that train for such things 270 isn't that much. Only 2 45's and a 25 on each side. Now it will probably be a while before I can exceed this bench and pushing that much does involve a lot of my back. :) Ever see anyone push their pelvas in the air when doing huge weight on the bench? :) - Drew

That's one of those words that you just can't make a mistake with or it really hurts whatever argument you're proposing. Sort of like when you see someone correct another person's spelling and in doing so they inevitably misspell the word "misspelling" :) Cheers, Tom Archer "Use what talents you possess. Anything else is cheating! ;) I weigh 175 lbs and I used to do 220 lbs. I'm glad if I can push 200 now. :sigh: -- Wir müssen leben bis wir sterben.
