I have two 17" monitors next to each other, one on a switch and the other on the linux box. You should have asked for a 19" (or even 21") and then perhaps you'd have got a 17". The way to go about such upgrade requests here would be to complain to the Occupational Health and Safety officer in your corporation that your eyes are hurting, getting headaches etc from straining to see your work on the crappy monitor. Good luck, Robert.

Not for me George, not for me. It might work for others including the unlucky cat in that cat and mouse cartoon or even for that poor coyote in the road-runner show. But not for Nish. I have 15" set to 1024x768(75Hz) at the office and at work and it seems OK. The office one is an LCD and gives a really sharp picture and the one at home is a classic (MAG) but with Polaroid filter and it's also pretty good. I think it depends a lot on the particular job you are doing, but I remember to work with 800x600 on 14" and it was OK most of the time. Also, I don't use the Visual Studio to browse the code but only to type it. I use the doxygen-generated hyperlinked documentation file to browse and analize code, then I go to type it but it doesn't matter so much that I can't see a lot of code at once because I already have the code "mapped" in my mind... On the other hand I noticed that management in general doesn't like to give developers too many "toys" to play. I have an LCD screen just because everybody here got one, and developers were not the first to get one either. It's annoying, but not much you can do about it - they always think that we should be able to type the code using a notepad and 14" monochrome monitor. Any additional software tools or better hardware (be it monitor or CPU or memory) is considered as "toys" and often refused :(

I was running 800x600 at 85 Hz I now swicthed to 1024x768 on my small 15" I had to reduce refresh rate to 60 Hz to do that and I'll probably go blind in 3 weeks time. I found that the fonts are all so small, they are unreadable So I changed my color scheme to Windows [large] and that made things better except on CP. Chris uses hard-coded font sizes for CP pages and thus changing the fonts have absolutely no effect on CP. I wish Chris would go and read that nice article written by Paul on using relative fonts Nish Sonork ID 100.9786 voidmain www.busterboy.org If you don't find me on CP, I'll be at Bob's HungOut

You could bargain with them, take the 15" monitor; but make it one of those flat panels. The one I installed at a clients office last thursday had the same viewable size as a standard 17" :) That same client also bought a 17" flat panel... I needed some kleenex after I played with that one a bit :omg: I'd love to say "one of these days" I'll get one, but I don't see that in the forseeable future :(( James Sonork ID: 100.11138 - Hasaki

I was quite pissed recently when my management rejected my request to upgrade my 14" monitor with a 17" monitor. They instead gave me a 15" which though is better than a 14" is far from useful. I can't even use 1024x768. I can but then I'll need a magnifying glass. Just wondering - how many lines of code do you see and how many you would like to see? For example I can see around 15 - 20 lines, depending on the amount of windows open at the same time since tabs are taking more if I open more.

Hmm, I bought a 17" monitor privately while I still had 15" monitor at work. I ended up starting my own company, just to keep working with a larger screen :-) Bottom line: there's no doubt cheap management attitude makes people look for other interesting things instead of giving all their energy to the company. Now in my new company young developers get 19" monitors. Yes, they cost a few bucks more, but these costs return quickly since people appreciate when they feel they're taken a good care. Iiyama Vision Master Pro 510, 22" at work, Sony GDM-F500R, 21" at home. Never compromise when it comes to the monitor. Otherwise you may very well end up being half blind at 60. Couldn't you just threaten your company with a lawsuit if your eyes went bad because of your "horrible" work situation? (Note that I don't have a clue how the law system works in India) Employers that don't value your eyes, arms, or any other part of your body (i.e. ergonomics), doesn't value you. In the long run, you're the guy that will get the bad aches, not the employer :( Struggle on Nish, get yourself a bigger monitor or another employer ;)

It's not just the number of lines that matter. I'd like to be able to keep most of the dockable control bars open. And in VC++ 7 when we take help, it comes as part of the tabbed dockable dialog bar on the right. So to be able to have a wide enough window to code as well as to be able to see enough of the help, we really need a large enough monitor Nish Sonork ID 100.9786 voidmain www.busterboy.org If you don't find me on CP, I'll be at Bob's HungOut

At work I have a 19" running 1280 x 1024, but most of the time I am using my laptop w/ 1600x1400, which is quite cool  Unfortunately, at home I have a 17" only :(( Regards Thomas Finally with Sonork id: 100.10453 Thömmi

I dont wanta wear glasses at 24. I am now at 60 Hz and the monitor seems to be blinking at me. Its pathetic to use 1024 on a 15" Jörgen Sigvardsson wrote: Struggle on Nish, get yourself a bigger monitor or another employer But it'll be sad that after 2 years of a nice relationship with them, I had to leave over a monitor. Well, you would not leave over the monitor but your health. Also, two years sounds like quite enought in place ;) The longest period I worked for one company was 18 months, while I was still a student. After graduation I changed jobs after one and half year max, with awerage job lenght expectation at one year right now. Just when I get bored doing the same things with old tools it's time to switch. Interestingly that keeps me with better and better monitor and other hardware as well as more recent versions of all the software :) Also, I quit one of my very favorite jobs (1 year 4 months there) when they refused to send me for an international conference about new technology I was supposed to use, argument being "too expensive", which it wasn't. I quit just while the boss was out on that very conference (he promised to pass me on all the information) Well, I figured that he knew all about it so he didn't need me any more... ;)

I was quite pissed recently when my management rejected my request to upgrade my 14" monitor with a 17" monitor. They instead gave me a 15" which though is better than a 14" is far from useful. I can't even use 1024x768. I can but then I'll need a magnifying glass. I mean people think only graphics designers need big monitors. I believe this wrong thinking. I mean to make full use of all the Visual Studio toolbars we really need a 17" monitor. I am pretty sure it will greatly improve my programming speed and efficiency. Your thoughts? Nish Sonork ID 100.9786 voidmain www.busterboy.org If you don't find me on CP, I'll be at Bob's HungOut

We use the Matrox dual monitor system. So I run at a resolution of 2560 by 1024. The first monitor is 21" while the second is a 17". The setup is very good for debugging apps as VC and the app in question can be setup to not overlap which is very useful. Sorry to make you feel bad about it. Hope you get a better monitor size soon Nish, although if they have just given you a shiny new 15" you may be out of luck for a while. Roger Allen Sonork 100.10016
