What size monitors do you guys use?

I was running 800x600 at 85 Hz I now swicthed to 1024x768 on my small 15" I had to reduce refresh rate to 60 Hz to do that and I'll probably go blind in 3 weeks time. I found that the fonts are all so small, they are unreadable So I changed my color scheme to Windows [large] and that made things better except on CP. Chris uses hard-coded font sizes for CP pages and thus changing the fonts have absolutely no effect on CP. I was quite pissed recently when my management rejected my request to upgrade my 14" monitor with a 17" monitor. They instead gave me a 15" which though is better than a 14" is far from useful. I can't even use 1024x768. I can but then I'll need a magnifying glass. I mean people think only graphics designers need big monitors. I believe this wrong thinking. I mean to make full use of all the Visual Studio toolbars we really need a 17" monitor. I am pretty sure it will greatly improve my programming speed and efficiency. Your thoughts? With prices where they are, anything less than a 17" is a crime... I agree with another poster: fork over some cash and buy one, clearly marked as "Personal Property of Nish". Here's my history: 1993: 14" monitor 1994: 17" monitor 1997: 21" monitor with 12" monochrome debugging monitor 2000: 21" monitor with second 19" VGA monitor 2002: 17" monitor (sigh... eight years of progress down the tubes) Each change happened when switching to a new company... maybe it's time for a change, Nish... ;-) Tim Lesher http://www.lesher.ws

Yup. A 15", monochrome, running at 50Hz. And it only displays the consonants and punctuation marks. I have to guess at what the vowels are. Just how this saves us money escapes me, but I'm sure there was a good reason.

At work: Two 21" FD monitors for development, and a 15" LCD for the test machine. At home: 24" 16:9 FD monitor and a TV out to a 43" 16:9 HDTV for games.

At home I've got a Sony Trinitron 19" running at 1280x960 at 100Hz and in the office a CTX 15" flat screen ( 17" viewable area ) and a 17" monitor both running at 1024x768 coming off a Matrox dual head card. I pity anybody still running less than 17" i don't think my eyes could cope - Maybe we should start a collection...!

21" at work 17" at home They were good to me with the monitor, but the computer is only a 200 mhz, Pentium I. So about 2 years ago I brought my home computer to work. It's a 500 mhz, Pentium III. It was worth it. It saved my sanity. I'm a much happier person now. I just couldn't handle the constant lockups on the Pentium I. You could go out and buy a 17" monitor and try leasing it to them. Maybe $15 or $20 a month. One of my co-workers did that. I can't charge my company for my computer because I owe them big time. I had to take off 2 months this past year for health problems and they paid me for it. So I think I will donate that computer to them. Cathy Life's uncertain, have dessert first!

Nish, If you don't like their monitors, go buy your own. Make sure you mark it clearly and let management know that this is YOUR monitor so that you can take it when you leave.

I might as well be in India, but no, Bullhead City, AZ, USA. I've got two networks, one I inherited that runs on something called SuperDOS and controls all retail operations, and one NT system that I built for the corporate office. Mind you, the company won't pay for training or tools, so both have been extraordinarily challenging to keep up. Unfortunately, when I installed it I used the Small Business Server WinNT package. Worst chunk of crap ever invented, and the biggest mistake I ever made, technically that is. Nothing in the certification manuals works on SBS, as it is designed to have a different directory structure and to be maintained using a wizard called the SBS Console. Sadly, this wizard ceases to operate anytime you make a configuration change and it has to be re-installed. Considering that the re-installation instructions provided in the Knowledge Base don't work, it is an unmitigated nightmare to run.

I have a 19" on one machine and a 17" on the other. Hell, even my wife's 6 year old 133 MHz machine has a 17"!

At work I have a 19" and a 17". We also have a 15" attached to a machine for checking apps on. I prefer the 17" over the 19". At home I have two monitors attached to my machine . The primary is a 15" flat screen and the other is a 17" Sony. Just curious why not just buy your own 17". The local computer store has a 17" for 88.00 and a 19" for 139.00. I use a circa 1998 21" (20" visible) Trinitron running at 1600x1200 @ 65Hz. I can't use anything smaller than 1600x1200 any more. At work I have a Sun monitor (fed by my PC and my Sun workstation) running at 1800x1440. I used to own a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop that displayed 1400x1150 on its LCD screen and up to 1600x1200 external. Dell now offers a native 1600x1200 resolution on its 15.4" screen. Try waving your head and in front of a 60 Hz monitor, and look at the monitor between your fingers. It is impossible to say if you have any fingers at all or if the monitor renders the colors really bad.. ;) If it feels like the monitor is "blinking" when looking at it straight on, your eyes are taking damage and you may even develop epilepsy (spelling..?). You'll end up straining your eyes, thus reducing your eyes capabilities over time and you'll have tons of head aches along the way. Been there, done that, not doing it again. You must convince your boss that they cannot afford to lose their best programmers eyes and sanity.. ;)

At my company, 17" is the standard for most desktops, but developers get 21" monitors, including those of us who work from home! I think that I am going to try to get a 19" LCD for ergonomic purposes (we spend much more on the 21" than a good 19" LCD costs). When I first started I was given a blurry 17". So I brought in my own 19". Now I have dual 19"s and a 18" flat.
