Anyone using F-Prot Antivirus? I'm looking into adding some virus scanning to the mailservice at http://wdevs.com/[^] and have been looking at F-Prot as I can afford it and it works nicely with our mailserver... Anyone having something good or bad to say about F-Prot? - Anders My Photos

Used to be installed as a desktop scanner on all company machines here. Was slow, and with active scanning on could make file access painfully slow for other apps. While this thing was out, we spent far too much time making code changes to various apps and dlls, trying avoid disk access. Got in trouble with IT on numerous occasions for telling callers who complained of poor performance to turn off the scanner - but it made a response-time difference of nearly a minute in one very common situation. But hey, might be just a dandy email scanner for all i know. YMMV.

I'm using it for mail server on http://www.vbcity.com[^] - it works just fine. Occasionally it will let slip a email or two (those with password protected zip attachments) but I can't complain much. It is a great value for the price. Thanks, Serge Baranovsky http://www.vbcity.com

I have used F-Prot maybe 6 years now in my two home computer. F-Prot was also used in my last work place (workstations and servers). I don't remember any problems. It hasn't affected to my computer speed and has detected all viruses before they can do anything. Only bad thing what I can say, is that it have currently 12 (!) processes running in my computer.

I'd like to second Shog's experience - we have it installed on desktops & servers where I work and it kills disk performance. For example - at home, using Norton, a Visual Studio compilation gets 95+% CPU time. At work, it can often get ~ 60%, with 35% taken by the virus scanner. That sucks. Yes, it finds virii (I've had some pruned from e-mails), but so does pretty much any AV software as long as you keep it updated.
