Mmmm...Lophraig...

Mmmm...I never thought I would, but I'm developing a taste for single malt scotches, anyone have their favorites? I tried Dalwhinney (sp?) in the past, but at that time didn't find anything to recommend the practice of drinking single malt's so gave it up, but recently I decided to try again and bought a bottle of Lophraig and it has a *huge* taste, really smoky, hard to describe. Way beyond the usual amount of flavors you get from any other "booze". I might just try something else if anyone has any recommendations (there are so many to choose from). Almost makes me wish I hadn't quit smoking 11 months ago, I'm certain a smoke would go well with it, alas I now run a half hour every day so it would be pretty hard to go back to smoking again at this point....maybe cigars though. Being in Canada I'm sure I can russel up some fine Cuban cigars around here somewhere and get just that extra bit of enjoyment out of them knowing they are taboo for our friends to the south of the border. ;)

It's also another Islay malt, like Laphroaig - and there does tend to be a correlation between geographical location and taste to a certain degree. Other favourites? Always enjoyed Glenmorangie, Taliskers pleasant. I like trying new whiskys, so it's a case of finding them at a reasonable price... A few years back I worked on a project that took me out to Spain every week and my Dad likes whisky got me to bring back a bottle every so often because (even although it wasn't duty free with Spain and the UK being in the EU) Spanish tax was much lower than UK Tax. So long as the tax is paid somewhere in the EU you can bring it into the UK from somewhere else in the EU.

Yeah, other countries are good for whisky. I've got some cheap from Spain on holiday before. Being in the situation you were in (someone else paying for regular flights) is the best way to work it, though. Actually, at this time of the year, Sainsburys can be pretty good for whisky - there were quite a few with £10 off a bottle last year, and I've seen one this year - I shall have to investigate more thoroughly!
