...and considering moving back into what was (until recently; possibly still) the gaping mouth of (un)employment hell, the Portland, Oregon area. If there are any of you out there who are working in the area and can give me the lowdown on the job market I'd sure appreciate it. I'm not totally naive - I know it's been very depressed, and continues to be so to one degree or another, but my family and I are pretty motivated to move and I'd like to make it as painless for them as possible. I'm a senior software developer / team lead (10+ years) specializing in C#, ADO.Net, ASP.Net, SQL Server and Oracle (8.x, 9.x). I've also done some VB.Net, VB.Old (4/5/6) and a little Java. Any help is appreciated! Thanks,

I have not kept up with the job market up north (southern Oregon here ;) ), but a few of my email lists of openings show signs of increased openings in the Portland area. of course, Seattle seems to be the big buzz though for .NET developers. A quick hit on Monster showed this opening for $85K if you have any C++ in that history. http://tinyurl.com/4p3pg[^] If you are into scrum, you take a look at Canright: http://tinyurl.com/5ckqa[^] You might also keep an eye out for jobs in the Portland Dot Net User Group, I have seen several jobs posted there: http://www.padnug.org/padnug/default.aspx[^] If you happen to be hitting Seattle, this one has multiple openings at $25-$50 per hour. http://tinyurl.com/4tm7b[^] Rocky <>< Opps.. Here you go!

Where in Tx are you, and how long have you been here? I came from the east coast and I must say it was a huge culture shock for me. BUT... After being here for 5 years, it has really grown on me. I went back to PA for 2 weeks over Christmas, and I must say, I'm glad to be back in TX! Needless to say, it took me 2 years to get used to it here. ~Nitron.

Thanks for the encouragement, however my family and I have been here six years, and we've had the opposite reaction. We're in Austin and initially we liked it here very much (weather, geography, people etc), but we've just gradually realized that the Portland area is where we want to be. Part of it is that our families both live in the area and we want our kids to grow up knowing their relatives (I grew up on the opposite side of the country from my extended family, and have almost no relationships with any of them), and part of it is the area. It's been nice living in different parts of the country, but we're ready to settle somewhere, and haven't found anywhere better for us than the Willamette Valley. Thanks again for asking - I hope you continue to enjoy it in Texas!

Yea, being away from family is the toughest part here. But I couldn't find a job I would be happy with in the Wyoming Valley (PA). There is no industry there whatsoever. :sigh: I'd imagine Portland has more to offer. I was always around my family growing up, and it is good for the kids (especially if they have cousins to play with while you and wifey get to hang out ;) ). Best of luck! ~Nitron.
