Planes

I've got the feeling there are many aviation fanatics there. So let's talk about planes, and especially what is your favorite one? I porpose two categories, propeller and jet. Honor to whom honor is due, I begin ;P Propeller plane: Tempest Mk V[^] Jet plane: I'm hesitating between the Rafale[^] and the incredible Blackbird[^] So, what are your choices? (pictures welcome!)

For us Canadians, there is only one worth mentioning. The De Havilland Beaver[^]. :) Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] Gently arching his fishing rod back he moves the tip forward in a gentle arch releasing the line.... kersplunk [Doug Goulden] Nice sig! I'm not a huge plane buff, but the F-22 Raptor is just unspeakably beautiful to my eyes. Other candidates include the SR-71 and MiG-29, of course, but the F-22 just looks so clean and simple. When I see it I can't help but think "form = function". -- Russell Morris "So, broccoli, mother says you're good for me... but I'm afraid I'm no good for you!" - Stewy

I'm going to have to be very predictable: Propeller plane: probably the Spitfire[^] - the shape of the wings, the sound of the Merlin engine, what it represents. Runners-up: Focke-Wulf Ta-152[^], Bristol Beaufighter[^], DeHavilland Mosquito[^] Jet plane: has to be Concorde[^]. I lived near Filton, where the English test flights were based (IIRC), so we used to see (and hear) quite a lot of Concorde. Runners-up: English Electric Lightning[^] (a missile with a man stuck on top of it, basically!), MiG 29[^]. [edit]How could I forget the XB-70 Valkyrie[^]?? Never entered service, but WOW![/edit] Stuart Dootson 'Java, Basic, who cares - it's all a bunch of tree-hugging hippy cr*p'

For modern jet fighter air craft the prize MUST go to the F-14 http://142.26.194.131/aerodynamics1/Appendix/Aircraft/f14.htm[^] For propeller aircraft in the non fighter catagory I present the Moller Ski Car http://142.26.194.131/aerodynamics1/Appendix/Aircraft/moller_aircar.html[^] And in the fighter variety the P51 Mustang - the prettest ( almost ) WWII fighter http://www.coastcomp.com/av/fltline2/p51.htm[^] Or the P38 http://home.tiscali.dk/winthrop/p38.html[^] For the biggest and baddest however I present the X15 http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/aircraft/jets/X-15/X-15info/X15-info.htm[^] Richard "Under certain circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer --Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)

K(arl) wrote: I would also add the He219[^] Nice one. I have a fondness for the later propellor driven fighter planes (as evidenced by the Ta-152). Insanely powerful engines, getting up to 450mph+. I work about 5 miles from the United States Air Force Museum[^], which has the one remaining XB-70 on display. Excruciatingly .

One that I forgot to mention is the F111 - http://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detail.asp?aircraft_id=72[^] This little jewel is unique in that it had no "official" nickname like other fighter/bomber aircraft usually had. The AF published the unofficial nickname as the "Ardvark" but I remember from Nam that the pilots nickname was "The Savior". The reason was that every time someone saw it for the first time they almost always remarked "Jesus Fu**ing Christ". I have always like the lines of the Spitfire probably due to growing up in Chicago and having it hang right in the entrance to the Museum of Science and Industry[^] For earlier props I will vote for the Fokker DIIV Fokker D IIV[^] Early Jets goes to the F-86[^] For newer jets the F-16[^] wins I do not mind getting old. It beats all the other options that can think of.

I really favour propellor planes over jet planes, especially WWI and WWII fighter planes. Shame that Anthony Fokker died at the age of 49 in 1939, he made some impressive planes. Prop: Fokker G1[^] Prop: Vought F4U Corsair[^] Jet: A10 Thunderbold (warthog)[^] Arjan
