I've been cooking all my life, and I'm told that I'm quite good at it. But I've not hard-boiled an egg in many years, and I have a little girl coming to stay the night who expects to dye some eggs for Easter. I seem to remember that you're supposed to start them out in cold water, but I don't remember how long to let them boil. I'm picking her up at 3, and it's almost 9 here - Help!!!:-O "If it's Snowbird season, why can't we shoot them?" - Overheard in a bar in Bullhead City

5 to 7 minutes of actual boil time bro. Have fun with Easter. Jerry He said this was like painstakingly assembling the first layer of a house of cards, then boasting that the next 15,000 layers were a mere formality.--The Code Book, pp. 331 Toasty0.com DotNetGroup.org

start with cold water, so they don't crack If it's for painting rather than eating, 10 minutes don't hurt. (It is said they last longer this way, but I'm not sure.)

More is better, eh? I've had hard boiled eggs so hard and rubbery that they're hardly fit to eat - I wonder how long they were cooked. "If it's Snowbird season, why can't we shoot them?" - Overheard in a bar in Bullhead City

I put them in cold water. Wait until the water starts boiling and then time it for 10 minutes. Cheers, Tom Archer - Archer Consulting Group Programmer Trainer and Mentor and Project Management Consultant

This is exactly what I've been taught (to boil for 10 mins) and we frequently boil eggs at home and eat them throughout the week. No kidding! Jeez. I eat boiled eggs at least twice a week and certainly never have rubbery eggs. Just take them off after ten mins of boiling and you're set. Cheers, Tom Archer - Archer Consulting Group Programmer Trainer and Mentor and Project Management Consultant

What part about the salt? Are you talking about the exothermic reaction of adding salt? I didn't see that in the article, but got bored once I saw about 10 steps required to "cook" an egg. the dissolved salt raises the boiling point of the solution slightly, so you cook at a higher temperature. Anger is the most impotent of passions. It effects nothing it goes about, and hurts the one who is possessed by it more than the one against whom it is directed. Carl Sandburg
