My VS.NET 2005 beta 1 DVD *finally* arrived! I ordered it back in December or January, and I finally could put my hands on it... With beta 2 coming out later this month, is it worth it to even install it?? :omg: -- LuisR

Depends. Are you planning on using C# 2.0, the new VB, or C++/CLI? If so, then yes, there's lots of goodies waiting for you. Additionally, the new VC++ compiler has (or will have with beta 2) an overhaul done on the CRT; new safe methods in replace of old and potentially dangerous string methods, with the common string methods being deprecating, issuing a compiler error, for instance. I imagine a lot of unmanaged C++ projects out there will be affected by this.

I was asking if it's worth installing it when there are only a few days (hopefully) to beta 2. I'm currently using C# in all my projects, so definitely installing the beta (1 or 2) to start playing with it, is a must. I've read a lot of cool things about them, and I can't wait to try them. I guess I'll be playing with it on the weekend. -- LuisR

Given that beta 2 is almost out, although who really knows, I would probably wait, for stability reasons only, since beta 2 is promised to be much more stable than beta 1. Also, you don't planning on installing it on a production machine, do ya? If so, be prepared to encounter all types of weird issues, at least I did; my 2003 installation literally became toast once I installed 2005 beta 1. Also, 2005 installs MDAC version 9.X, which you can't remove. MDAC is like a loaded gun waiting to fire. But then again, you've been waiting so long for it, you might as well; who knows when beta 2 will be out. I attended VS Live in Feb, and they said it would be out in six weeks, well, it's been six weeks and still nothing. Just make sure you don't take lightly the warning the install gives you that installing beta 1 may jack up your machine to the extent you have to reformat.

Yes. But don't be a poop-head like me an install it on the same machine as you have .NET1.1 or you'll run into problems. Jerry Most people are willing to pay more to be amused than to be educated--Robert C. Savage, Life Lessons Toasty0.com Ladder League (beta)
