This morning I receive in my inbox a request for help with some SQL. This is not unusual - I often get unsolicited email asking for help with programming issues. My normal response is to reply saying to ask in the forum because my answers are for the benefit of all. However, today's email was different. It was sent from an anonymous user who clicked on one of the replies I gave someone else. Because it was sent anonymously the Code Project servers could not attach an email address to it. So I have no one to reply to. I wonder if they are sitting waiting for a reply that can never come.

Once, some guy sent me a 2MB zip file containing an ASP.NET project, with something like "I liked your SQL article. My project isn't working, can you help me?" as the message body. When I tried to reply him, I received an automated answer that said that my e-mail address was blocked on his mailbox. What's the logic in asking help to someone and them blocking his e-mail address?? I see dead pixels Yes, even I am blogging now!

I should've gone to you first, but was thinking ASP.NET instead of SQL that late night of frustration. (Can you ever forgive me? :sigh: ) Anyways, if you have any suggestion I look forward to hearing from you. I hope you *always* re-direct them to the forums for the benefit of all users when they email you privately.

Maybe I should have stated that I occasionally ignore them altogether, usually when I've had a really bad day and I know that I will end up ranting at them. I always try and reply politely. But if I respond, I *always* direct them to the forums.

Same with me. I virtually never answer questions from anonymous users.

In that person's defense (if that's possible), you can specifiy a email address you can't see, that will be replied to when someone replies to your anwser when posting anonymously. - Drew
