Anyone living in Manhattan, Queens, or Brooklyn have positive/negative experiences with the local online cable providers? I am looking to drop my Verizon DSL service after an extremely frustrating service call last night, and get cable instead. It seems that for where I live (in Astoria) I can pick either EarthLink or RoadRunner. EarthLink seems the better deal, but I have no idea how good they are. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! SELECT * FROM User WHERE Clue > 0 0 rows returned Save an Orange - Use the VCF!

RoadRunner is an adelphia service. Adelphia is very likely the worst company that has ever existed. Their customer support staff have no experience, they over-charge, and do not provide a reliable service. They filed for chapter 13 years ago, and have since entered the local and long distance telephone industry. Again, worst in business. At va tech we petitioned to re-imburse the entire community for cable and internet bills. I dunno about earthlink, but anything is better than adelphia.

I live a little bit north actually, in Westchester county, and picked Cablevision Optimum Online. So far, so good.

i too have had good experiences with optimum online in north jersey, but i don't believe it will be an option for you as you seem to live in a time warner monopolization zone er... area. the only issues i've had are loss of service when the temperature drops below 15 degrees F. i think it has something to do with the cable splitter not being able to handle the drop in temperature.

I live in Sunnyside, love RoadRunner :) I've used it for about 3 years or so (maybe more), it's just there. I never have to think about it. I've had no downtime (hope I'm not tempting fate here) since I got it. I use it withe Vonage for all my home calls etc. Gary Marc Clifton: "In other words, VB is like a bad parent. My wife and I were contemplating heading up Rhode Island way next weekend, neither of us have been before. Suggestions on where to stay would be welcome. (We have a 10 week old baby to consider too). Gary Marc Clifton: "In other words, VB is like a bad parent. It can really screw up your childhood."

You can get a great view of the mansions from the outside on the Newport Cliff Walk[^]. Newport also has lots of a nice wharf and various antique shops and, sadly, the usual "Anytown USA" shops, but there are still some mom&pop places with character. If you want to splurge, I've stayed at the Ivy Lodge[^] B&B and had great experiences. Nearby is Jamestown and Beavertail State Park[^]. Since I live "on the mainland", our personal favorite haunts are Goddard Park[^] and Naragansett beach.[^] The beach is close to the quaint town of Wakefield. Hope that helps! I know what you mean. It took me 6 calls to verizon tech support after my line was supposed to be activated to fix my problem. In each case they had to reinstall my NIC. I am a hardware expert and I have installed 100s of NICs at work this was sooo frustrating. On top of that I told them that my modem signal light was blinking (which means searching for a signal) and that I had previously had my line activated by a company that went bankrupt before actually ever connected to their network. They all looked up my account in their database and it had no record of me being activated by verizon yet they still had me go through the 12 step network installation guide. I finally got my problem fixed by asking for a manager. After several weeks of trying to track down who now owned my line. The bankrup company was bought out by a second company that went bankrupt. Since they owned my dsl connection I did not have the right to have it disconnected. After several more calls to verizon I convinced them to disconnect me from the new bankrupt company and connect me to their service. John

I'm not sure how useful this is to you, given that I live in Ohio, but I have EarthLink as my ISP, running over Time Warner Cable (e.g. Road Runner) hardware. Time Warner handled the installation. The technician was on time, courteous, and didn't leave until everything worked to my satisfaction. EarthLink/Time Warner performance is very good. I haven't had any significant outages. EarthLink online customer service is outstanding. I typically use their chat support. Billing for EarthLink is through my Time Warner bill.

Newport and Narragansett are definitely the best places to see in the state. Beavertail is one of my favorite spots as well. Check out this site for information on places to stay in South County (the county Narragansett is in). There are many beautiful New England B&Bs. PS - Be careful when you come here for two reasons. First, be prepared for bad drivers. In all seriousness they do not always stop for red lights and nearly no one knows how to navigate a 4-way stop. I really wish someone had warned me of this before I came and nearly got into a bunch of accidents. Also watch out for the "RI Road Block" which is where a driver will block one lane of traffic and wait for the other to clear while making a left turn. Second, for some reason it's hard to leave. I came for college and didn't intend to stay, yet two years later I'm still here... Oh, and enjoy, it's a really beautiful place full of great people and loaded with quaint New England charm.

Interesting... I'm in Wakefield RI at the moment and had a similar experience when moving into the new apartment. Cox came right away and set it up but it was slower than molasses. We even paid more for higher bandwith and it was still bad. They placed us on a new beta program and it still stunk. Then, we had enough with Cox (which was living up to its name  ) and called Verizon. When we moved in, the management said Verizon wasn't really coming to the building so your mileage would vary. Within a week we had Verizon all set up and going great. The only problem we had was miswired phone lines (in a new building) which the Verizon tech fixed for us. Oh, and yeah, it's cheaper than even basic Cox while being a metric butt-load faster, yes that's a techincal term :). Plus, we got a letter in the mail yesterday to inform us that they were lowering their rate $8/month. From a technical point of view, DSL is a better structure if you're within distance of a switching station. You will not wind up losing bandwith because youre neighbors are on, like you do with cable. Think about it, cable lines were designed to mostly push data down to the home, where telephone lines are designed to be more bidirectional.
