Try ICQ - it relies on IRC for transport, though I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would trust a channel so fraught with spam and hackers... I had to use it tonight to discuss Google's summer of code program[^] I donwloaded a client but it was a 30 day trial, so I wanted to find something free. Thanks.

But mIRC isn't free anymore Well actually it never was, but now the shareware trial expires :-\ The irc client in trillian is pretty good -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit! Buzzwords!

It does. There's only a handful of messages you really need to know to use it. Off the top of my head:
Server: PING :[blah] Reply: PONG [blah]
Which you have to be careful with and get right. To send a messagePRIVMSG [target] message
and a couple of bits you need to do on startup (USER and NICK and JOIN). Easy :-)

Uhm, okay - do you use telnet to check mail too? or have you upgraded to Pine? :-D

Nishant Sivakumar wrote: Uhm, okay - do you use telnet to check mail too? or have you upgraded to Pine? Outlook, of course ;P The reason I was using Telnet was because I was thinking about writing a simple IRC Client (after being shocked at how downright awful Bersirc 2 was), and figured I'd better get an idea of how it worked under the covers to see how easy the protocol is to handle - if I could do it in telnet, I could write a program to do it for me :-)

Trillian can do this (both free and Pro versions). [^] Anna :rose: Riverblade Ltd - Software Consultancy Services Anna's Place | Tears and Laughter "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up. It didn't work.

I have trillian, but I didn't see an option to let me log into an IRC server and go into a group chat. Is it there? Am I missing it? Thanks, Jerry

Yeah that's what I downloaded and I found that it wasn't free.
