I'm taking a holiday! w00t! A whole 5 days. I'm packing my bike and meeting a friend in Courmayeur, then quickly heading out of town into Annecy in France to cycle some of the Tour de France. There's evidently paragliding on the menu as well as the infamous Alpe d'Huez with it's 30-odd switch-backs. I'm either going to be very fit or very broken (or both) by the end of the week. Wish me luck! cheers, Chris Maunder

Buono viaggio. Appena controlla spesso e non avrai un attacco di cuore, noi abbiamo bisogno di te in buona forma :) (If my Italian is still good enough, this is "Good travel. Just control yourself and don't have a heart attack, we need you in good shape" :) ) I see dead pixels Yes, even I am blogging now!

That sounds like real fun. Bummer you couldn't make it. :( An eye for a tooth will only make you see weird things.

I've got a Trek 5200 back home (Ultegra, 120 carbon) but for this trip it's my old, clunky Merida 907 (aluminium, carbon forks) with very bent Ultegra running gear. I've come off a few times :D My main problem is that my Merida has a 12-19 cluster (great for the flat sprints that I love) but this is going to kill me on the hills. My mate's running 12-23 so I'm going to be left for dead most of the way. cheers, Chris Maunder

That's probably a good choice - the Merida, I mean. I'd be a little nervous about shipping a really pricey bike - I've seen bikes get pretty badly mangled by baggage handlers, even when they were in a supposedly bash-proof hard shell case. You're planning on doing the climb w/ a 12-19? This thing have a triple chainring? It's going to be a killer with a standard 42-52 chainring setup. After two back surgeries, a double hernia surgery and most recently a heart attack in the last 7 years, I spec'd a 39-53 ring setup and a 13-26 cluster on my new machine. Even with the 39/26 bailout gear, I still suffer on big climbs. Just don't have the legs I had 15-20 years ago, I'm afraid. :sigh:

I've got a hard case and the Merida is mangled enough that as long as it's rideable when I get there I'm happy. I've got a standard 39/52 front so I'm gonna die. cheers, Chris Maunder
