I've got a Trek 5200 back home (Ultegra, 120 carbon) but for this trip it's my old, clunky Merida 907 (aluminium, carbon forks) with very bent Ultegra running gear. I've come off a few times :D My main problem is that my Merida has a 12-19 cluster (great for the flat sprints that I love) but this is going to kill me on the hills. My mate's running 12-23 so I'm going to be left for dead most of the way. cheers, Chris Maunder

That's probably a good choice - the Merida, I mean. I'd be a little nervous about shipping a really pricey bike - I've seen bikes get pretty badly mangled by baggage handlers, even when they were in a supposedly bash-proof hard shell case. You're planning on doing the climb w/ a 12-19? This thing have a triple chainring? It's going to be a killer with a standard 42-52 chainring setup. After two back surgeries, a double hernia surgery and most recently a heart attack in the last 7 years, I spec'd a 39-53 ring setup and a 13-26 cluster on my new machine. Even with the 39/26 bailout gear, I still suffer on big climbs. Just don't have the legs I had 15-20 years ago, I'm afraid. :sigh:
