After all these years of using Notepad, I came across this little feature that may be considered a bug. If you open Notepad, type something in and then delete all of it (i.e., Ctrl+A, Ctrl+X), closing it will close Notepad without prompting you to save it. The only reason I started doing this was I needed to copy some HTML text without the markup, and Notepad was the obvious choice. I actually like this feature because I know I don't need to save it. However, I don't seem to recall seeing this prior to XP, and it seems likely that I would have selected everything in Notepad for deletion at some point in my life and closed it and run into this, but I can't remember ever doing so. I don't think that's a bug since you are undoing your typing. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

Huh? Notepad is *extremely* buggy. It probably hasn't been updated in many years and often screws up documents. True. However, I believe there was an article that talked about fixing that. I believe it used the Resource Hacker to recompile Notepad to allow for that. "If only one person knows the truth, it is still the truth." - Mahatma Gandhi Web - Blog - RSS

Update - Spoke too soon. The Ctrl+S feature seems to have been fixed in XP. :-) "If only one person knows the truth, it is still the truth." - Mahatma Gandhi Web - Blog - RSS

I've used this feature for years knowing that it won't prompt me.

Ctrl+S works fine in Windows 2000's Notepad.

If you've been using notepad for years, then I don't think the bug is in the software. Haven't you heard of EmEditor, or any of the (probably thousands) other choices? Notepad is not an editor, it is just a little demo app showing how to stretch a textbox far beyond the limits for which it was designed. Sorry, I just don't have much sympathy for massochists. ;P Get yourself a real editor. Matt Gerrans

I actually use UltraEdit. However, when I'm at the client's office, Notepad is all I have on the desktop that they provide me with. You're right about it being a demo app, but it is still a very useful tool depending on how one uses it. Most text editors are too overloaded, kind of like the ICQ website when it became popular. :-D "If only one person knows the truth, it is still the truth." - Mahatma Gandhi Web - Blog - RSS

Notepad fails miserably when trying to open a Unix-style file. Personally, I prefer Notepad2[^]. The generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance.

It wasn't an undo. But, since Notepad seems to have only one level of undo it should see it as a change and prompt you.
