One more OS I'll have to 'downgrade' by changing the settings to 'windows classic' (God, I hope 'windows classic' won't mean that terrible XP Fisher-Price Toy look...) I cringe every time I here it called "Classic". To me, it's always looked amateurish and clumsy. At least XP allows you to change the theme; before that we were stuck with it! Any interface should be comfortable and/or customizable. There is no such thing as idiot proof as we all know, nature wins every year at providing more idiots to compete with. However, regardless of competition from nature, we don't give up improving software. I am neither defending or attacking Microsoft, but first impressions are important. I do real-world 3D information, I've spent the last 10 years working toward more and more realistic looking presentation of information. To the point that people get angry because it is getting "too real." What is "too real?" is that kind of like "640k" mythic quotes in a modern setting? or is that like the quote from Amadeus, "too many notes." The software will be judged on function, once function can be evaluated (it goes on sale) for the average user. Until then it will be evaluated only on UI whether the practice is good or bad. Once in the hands of a user, it will be evaluated a 2nd time on first impression which is 95% UI and 5% function. As use of the product increases the balance between appearance and function will be more balanced, but will always start from an imbalanced state of preference towards UI appearance. Form and Function are equally important in the long run, but in the short run, Form wins almost everytime. That is just the way the business works, we may not like it, but we live with it. My only hope is that it will be a single registry key, or something similarly simple, to switch it from the resource-hog default to Windows 2000 UI. I'm not some console/CLI snob pining away for the good old days of 3270 terminals, but transparent windows and icons that preview the file contents are a waste of CPU cycles for me. Make it uber-fancy for the people who have money to burn on $1,000 video cards and gigs of RAM, but give me the choice of turning it off easily too, please. I don't even like the XP themes. I'll take the Win2000 interface on top of my WinXP stability, thank you very much, and leave it at that.

They fluffy crap is the first thing to get shut off when I install a system. I DO keep the enhanced start menu though. I like that.
